About this deal

That being said, the charging case offers a combined battery life of approximately 28 hours, and the OpenFit’s fast-charging capabilities mean that just 5 minutes of charging will give you one extra hour of listening time. This is quite good and on par with most of the competition. Controls Pairing was super easy, and there’s no buttons to press to activate the headphones, you just open the case, put them on, and hit the play button. Battery life appears to be good – I ran for 3 hours at the weekend with no issues, the case re-charges them between use. The former can be counteracted within certain limits with the equalizer in the Shokz app for iOS and Android, the latter rather not. So you should already have music playing when putting on the OpenFit to help it fit perfectly according to acoustic criteria. Simply boosting the bass via the equalizer is not such a good idea. Despite its 18 x 11 cm diaphragm, the oval driver occasionally reached its limits in the listening test. More about this below in the detailed listening test. The OpenFit’s sound quality is surprisingly good. Because it’s air conduction, it doesn’t suffer too much from the issues that plague bone conduction headphones. The earphones have excellent bass response thanks to Shokz’s proprietary OpenBass technology, though it’s not entirely on par with other premium earphones like the AirPods Pro. One note of caution here is that cranking the volume up significantly does result in faster battery drainage, and that's a bit of a bummer considering these earbuds really benefit from higher volumes.

With the volume cranked so high, you’re going to encounter sound leakage. People won’t hear your music from across the room, but whoever’s sitting next to you likely will. And then there’s the fact that higher volumes drain battery faster – and seven hours in-ear wasn’t amazing to begin with – as well as the concerns of damaging your hearing through prolonged exposure to high-volume sound. Shokz claims a 28-hour battery life. I never wore out a battery in testing, but continuously stored them in the case. The OpenFit easily got me through a 10-hour workday. Shokz OpenFit Review: A Music Listening Session Each earphone weighs just 8.3g, and the hooks, made from a skin-friendly material known as zero-degree silicone, are so comfortable that I barely notice I’m wearing headphones. They are comfortable enough to use all day with no problems or difficulties, and best of all, they don’t add the discomfort and pressure of having something lodged in your ears. There's no wireless charging for this case, sadly, which is a bit surprising at this price, but USB-C means charging it up is still very easy.

How does the Shokz OpenFit sound?

The sound quality is quite impressive, with solid bass that does not drown out the higher-end frequencies.

Yes, history repeats itself here in our review: recordings with natural instruments, especially stringed instruments, sounded downright magical over the open-ears, with fabulous fine dynamics and a very generous, authentic sense of space. As for the voice reproduction, sometimes a tiny shift decides a slightly throaty discoloration, which mainly affects female voices, but also some male vocalists. The Shokz OpenFit sees Shokz ditch its bone conduction approach for an air conduction setup to deliver bigger open-ear sound by planting speakers in close proximity to your ears to deliver that sound.

How does the Shokz OpenFit connect?

The Shokz OpenFit is also designed with hygiene in mind. Traditional earbuds can accumulate dirt, sweat, and bacteria over time, impacting the audio quality, and leading to potential ear infections or discomfort. The OpenFit combats this with minimal maintenance and an IP54 water resistance rating. The Shokz OpenFit will undoubtedly split opinion. On the one hand, they excel within a particular niche. They’re excellent for listening to music when you’re running, cycling when you want to remain aware of what’s going on around you, and in the gym (so long as it's not too loud). And for those who dislike the feel of earbuds, they’re a lightweight and non-intrusive alternative to bulky over ear headphones. The OpenFit’s other strengths relate to their open-ear design, one which successfully achieves the goal of increasing awareness of your surroundings while the headphones are in use. This is invaluable if you’re running or cycling and can be useful when crossing the road or listening out for deliveries at home, too. Having cornered the bone-conduction headphones market, Shokz is trying something new with the Shokz OpenFit. These open-ear headphones leave your bones well alone and your ear canals unobstructed to provide environmental awareness while you enjoy whatever it is you’re listening to.

Though Shokz’s target market is sports fanatics, the OpenFit may be less than ideal for some. The low water resistance rating means that too much sweat could damage the device, and the fidgety controls aren’t easy to use while running or cycling. Shokz is using what it calls DirectPitch technology to do this, which is similar to air conduction. It uses sound waves to optimize the distance and angle between the earbud and your ear. This leads to more sound pressure directed right at your ear and less off into other directions. Comfort is paramount when it comes to headphones, especially for extended use. The Shokz OpenFit prioritizes comfort in three ways: Lab. We test every set of headphones we review thoroughly over an extended period of time. We never, ever, accept money to review a product.Imagine a world where music seamlessly intertwines with your surroundings. In 2011, the founders of Shokz aimed to create an audio experience that does exactly this. They developed an innovative new headphone model by combining an open-ear earphone design with bone conduction technology. He has been writing about hunting, fishing, trail running, camping, skiing, and more for 15+ years.

Press and hold the touch area of the earbuds with two fingers simultaneously until the indicator lights flash orange and green, which indicates the earbuds have entered pairing mode; But the OpenFit is not a panacea. Its radical open-ear design, which may also have inspired JBL’s Soundgear Sense, also requires certain compromises. These mainly affect the bass range, but also the midrange and treble reproduction. Although the oval diaphragm provides a surface area that exceeds that of conventional in-ears many times over, the pressure loss cannot be completely compensated for by the open design. After all, the main motivator was obviously to create a pair of sports headphones that were as compact and comfortable to wear as possible, without completely isolating you from your surroundings. The airy sound reproduction seems to be more of a collateral benefit here. The Shokz OpenFit require a little consideration The same can be said for noise leakage. I was surprised at how little people around me could hear considering the open-ear design, but they could still hear noise. For most scenarios, a little bit of leakage won’t matter. If you want these buds to cater for all day wear, you’ll need to consider whether they’re going to suit a super quiet office environment. Air conduction might be the marketing word for it, but it's not far off something like an old-fashioned first-generation AirPod, just one that sits outside your ear canal instead of right at its entrance. I put the Shokz OpenFits over my ears and let the music rip. Already connected to my phone, the earbuds fired up immediately without me having to push play. That can be a little alarming the first time, but not a big deal. Shokz Labが行った交差点でのシミュレーション実験結果によると、人工頭部での音圧レベルが65~72dB(A)の場合、AIノイズキャンセリングにより最大50dBのS/N比向上、すなわち99.7%の環境騒音低減が可能です。
