About this deal

Although most loft boarding jobs are relatively straightforward, there are a few additional costs to consider. These include:

If working within an un-floored loft space then crawl/kneel boards are to be laid to enable safe movement. These can be temporarily fixed in place to eradicate the risk of creating traps or movement. If you’re simply using your loft for general storage, a “cold loft” is fine, whereas if you’re storing items sensitive to temperature changes or planning to spend time up there, you’ll need a “warm loft”. These terms are actually misleading – a cold loft can be hot in summer and cold in winter, while a warm loft’s temperature is easier to control. It maintains airflow between the underside of the flooring and the insulation (stopping the build-up of condensation and all associated problems). We recommend you measure the area you’re looking to board out and work out a rough estimate. This will save you from any potential surprises further down the line. How long does it take to board a loft? Screw your first loft board down on top of your loft legs, close to the loft hatch. Use 2 screws per loft leg to fix the boards down. One board should have a total of 8 screws in it. I do need the loft for storage and want to know how to board above the new insulation without putting new joists/joist hangers in across the walls. I know new joists would be the 'proper way', but it does seem extreme when most of the year the loft will be closed shut. It'll only be used for storing things anyone could carry up the ladder and for heavier stuff I put that across the load-bearing wall in the middle to take the weight. When boarding out an attic there two main things to consider - keeping the air flow from the eaves clear and compromising the insulation by compressing it.

Now screw the board into the legs beneath it using 2 per leg. This board should also have a total of 8 screws fixed into the loft legs. For this we have used No.8 1 1/2 inch (38mm) wood screws ensuring that the support remains central to the beam while it’s screwed in place
