Goodfellow, Melanie (28 June 2023). " 'The Peasants' Teaser: Makers Of Oscar-Nominated 'Loving Vincent' Return With "More Spectacular" 19th Century Epic Drama". Deadline . Retrieved 1 August 2023. Reviewed at Busan Film Festival (Flash Forward), Oct. 8, 2023. Also in Toronto Film Festival. Running Time: 114 MIN. (Original title: "Chlopi") The novel, for which Reymont received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1924, is a fictional tale set during the late 19th century in the village of Lipce in Congress Poland — a part of the country under Russian control at the time.

Reymont’s work covers themes including peasant exploitation — we see the greatest exploitation is carried out by wealthy peasants owning small tracts of land against landless residents of Lipce (including sometimes their poorer relations) who are forced to earn a living as hired hands or beggars. The film features works from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, with an emphasis on Young Poland artists. It includes interpretations of works by artists such as Józef Chełmoński, Ferdynand Ruszczyc and Leon Wyczółkowski. [2] Józef Chełmoński's works used in a film include the following: [ citation needed] While being crude, superstitious and largely oblivious of the world outside their village, Lipce’s peasants are also imbued with noble qualities and a naive innocence that arouses sympathy and respect from the reader. Significantly, the (genderless) narratorial voice comes from within the community, no doubt reflecting the fact that Reymont himself grew up in a village. Contrary to what might be expected, given that Polish society at the time was predominantly rural, there are few comparable Polish works: Bolesław Prus’ The Outpost (1885–1886), Eliza Orzeszkowa’s The Boor (1888) or Maria Dąbrowska’s Folk from Yonder (1926), all of which have themes in common with The Peasants, have an external, more objectivised narrative perspective.

TOMASZ PIERSCIONEK rediscovers a masterpiece of Polish realism, finally translated into English

A film was made of the novel (directed by Eugeniusz Modzelewski) in 1922, as well as a television mini-series in 1972 (directed by Jan Rybkowski).

First published in four volumes between 1904 and 1909, The Peasants earned Reymont the 1924 Nobel Prize for Literature. Wikicommons

The composition of the novel is notable for its strict simplicity and functionality. The titles of the various volumes signal a tetralogy in one vegetational cycle, which regulates the eternal and repeatable rhythm of village life. Parallel to that rhythm is a calendar of religion and customs, also repeatable. In such boundaries Reymont placed a colourful country community with sharply drawn individual portraits. The repertoire of human experience and the richness of spiritual life, which can be compared with the repertoire of Biblical books and Greek myths, has no doctrinal ideas or didactic exemplifications. The author of The Peasants does not believe in doctrines, but rather in his own knowledge of life, the mentality of the people described, and his sense of reality. It is easy to point to moments of Naturalism (e.g. some erotic elements) or to illustrative motives characteristic of Symbolism. It is equally easy to prove the Realistic values of the novel. None of the "isms" however, would be enough to describe it. Born into an impoverished noble family, Reymont was educated to become a master tailor, but instead worked as a gateman at a railway station and then as an actor in a troupe. His intensive travels and voyages encouraged him to publish short stories, with notions of literary realism. Reymont's first successful and widely praised novel was The Promised Land from 1899, which brought attention to the bewildering social inequalities, poverty, conflictive multiculturalism and labour exploitation in the industrial city of Łódź (Lodz). The aim of the novel was to extensively emphasize the consequences of extreme industrialization and how it affects society as a whole. In 1900, Reymont was severely injured in a railway accident, which halted his writing career until 1904 when he published the first part of Chłopi.

The 28th Busan International Film Festival: Selection List". Busan International Film Festival. 5 September 2023 . Retrieved 12 September 2023. The English translation of Reymont’s work evokes a writing style akin to that of English novelist Thomas Hardy. Reymont’s vivid and detailed depictions of the novel’s numerous characters, the village and events such as baptisms, marriages, funerals and local fairs bring Lipce and its residents to life.

Continuing, she added: “Zaranko’s approach not only makes the original text accessible to contemporary readers but also helps to maintain its authenticity. Naturalism - a style of art or writing that shows people, things and experiences as they really are. In the book naturalism is used to present everyday life. The most famous fragment of the book when naturalism is shown is when Jakub – the farmhand - is cutting his leg. More than 90 painters in four studios in Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, and Serbia animated on canvas with oil-paints. To date, the artists have painted for more than 180 000 hours. For the paintings, they used Cobra paints from Royal Talens: water-soluble oil-paints, making them much more ecologically friendly and also healthier for the painters than regular oil paints.

The scale of the two films is incomparable. Loving Vincent is an intimate film, with a lot of static scenes and dialogue. The Peasants is much more spectacular. There are breath-taking dance scenes and even a pitched battle,” she explained. However, Reymont does so in an indirect way (perhaps so as not to fall foul of tsarist censors who would otherwise have forbidden publication) and paints no romantic illusions about the possibility of nationhood. Seminci premieres the Alquimias section, the main novelty of the program, a space for the discovery of vibrant and original cinema". Valladolid International Film Festival (in Spanish). 3 October 2023 . Retrieved 9 October 2023. Reymont harboured political leanings towards the clandestine and nationalistic National Democratic Party that was active around the time he wrote his work. Zaranko’s translation approaches this language with a light touch, utilising colourful informal speech that avoids any reliance on British dialects, while still retaining its northern rhythm at times.”

Impressionism - a style in painting developed in France in the late 19th century that uses colour to show the effects of light on things and to suggest atmosphere rather than showing exact details. In the book we can find impressionism in the descriptions of nature. Reymont was born in the village of Kobiele Wielkie, near Radomsko, as one of the nine children of Józef Rejment, an organist. His mother, Antonina Kupczyńska, had a talent for story-telling. She descended from the impoverished Polish nobility from the Kraków region. Reymont spent his childhood in Tuszyn, near Łódź, to which his father had moved to work at a wealthier church parish. Reymont was defiantly stubborn; after a few years of education in the local school, he was sent by his father to Warsaw into the care of his eldest sister and her husband to teach him his vocation. In 1885, after passing his examinations and presenting "a tail-coat, well-made", he was given the title of journeyman tailor, his only formal certificate of education.
