About this deal

One thing that standalone VR still hasn’t quite mastered is battery life. The Quest 2 will run for between two and three hours and takes two-and-a-half hours to charge from empty, which is only a little better than the Quest. It’s a good thing VR gaming isn’t the sort of thing you want to do for long periods at a time.

Previous Quest owners will notice there’s no physical IPD slider. Instead, you can just pull on the eye cups to toggle between three preset positions. I personally found the default setting perfectly comfortable, but it’s still good to see Meta allowing for some customisation. Controllers Internally, you can NOT replace the hard drive in the Quest 2 later. The version you buy on day one is the storage size you will have embedded forever. Meta has cranked up the max storage option to a whopping 256GB. The base 128GB option should be plentiful enough for the majority of players though, as most games and applications take up less than 1GB of space, while Robo Recall is one of the most demanding at just 3.51GB. That said, the price difference between the two configurations isn’t large at all. The first Oculus Quest made use of dual 1440 x 1600 resolution OLED displays (one for each eye), but the Quest 2 opts for a single LCD panel, split so as to display an 1832 x 1920 pixel resolution per eye. That’s about 50 percent sharper than the original, and while we’d usually prefer the richness of an OLED display, we hardly missed it here. LCD also opens up an improved refresh rate of 90Hz to developers, compared to the original Quest’s 72Hz - with an experimental feature bumping it up to 120Hz. Where supported, it will be a notably smoother experience. It's worth pointing out that some games won't work well if you're just standing still, you'll need to be able to reach out and grab things, but a lot of the key games available at launch, like Beat Saber and Angry Birds, can work if you're stationary. Oculus Quest 2 isn’t perfect, then – but it’s as close to perfect as VR has come so far and well worth your time, money, and energy if you’ve been looking for an excuse to swap reality for virtual reality. Oculus Quest 2: price and availability Offering access to both these play scenarios through one headset line is a wise move by Facebook, reducing the amount of hardware it supports. However, as mobile VR now becomes the default for Oculus (not everyone has a gaming PC, after all), we hope that that doesn’t dull the ambitions of developers. We wouldn't want to see apps focus solely on the lower-powered mobile headset and give a cold shoulder to the more powerful made-for-PC experiences that can be achieved. Oculus Quest 2: Accessories But there are some significant changes that would make an upgrade well worth it if you currently already have the original Quest and you’re considering the Quest 2. The new model offers a more responsive experience overall, thanks to improved RAM and chip specs. It also has a higher resolution display, which is a whole 50% sharper than its predecessor. Combined, these upgrades make the Oculus Quest 2 experience even more seamless and immersive. I’m not the biggest fan of the straps, as they’re easy to slip out of place and can sometimes dig into your head. The Pico 4’s plastic headband with a dial to adjust the fit provides a far more comfortable experience.

There are multiple types of content and which ones you plan on using determines which Quest 2 model you should get between the 64 vs vs 128 vs 256 GB. 128 GB Version However, what helps is that the Quest comes with a long, 6 metre-long cable, presumably this is so you can keep playing when it's charging. That means it's suddenly tethered again, but at least you have the option to charge and play. The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners will scratch that zombie-slaying itch, Cook-Out is a scrumptious cookery co-op venture, and Pistol Whip is an addictive rhythm-based shooter. You’ve also got the amazing Echo VR, which is essentially PvP online multiplayer volleyball in zero gravity. It’s a surreal experience and one of the best showcases of VR’s potential.

Oculus’ excellent standalone VR headset just got better – and cheaper

The most obvious question when comparing the Oculus Quest models is how big are the games. We’ll focus on the official Oculus store titles, which are generally a higher file size than anything found on SideQuest. The Quest is less powerful than the Rift, but that's to be expected – there's no PC powering this headset. The higher price for the Oculus Quest 2 does come with one new benefit though, you'll get a copy of one of the best Oculus Quest 2 games for free: Beat Saber. Buy a new Quest 2 before the end of 2022 and you'll be eligible to get a copy of the game at no charge.

So now that you know the facts, which size of Oculus Quest 2 between the 64 vs 128 vs 256 GB do you need? We found this accurate during our testing, with the Quest lasting between 2 hours and 2 hours and 20 minutes with a lot of gameplay. It's worth mentioning that as the Quest approached empty battery levels (from around 5%) we noticed some slight glitching of frames. It didn't stop gameplay, but it became clear it was about time for a charge. Oculus Quest 2 has access to some of the best virtual reality games that have been made. The range of inventive ideas on display is delightful, and with events like the Meta Quest Gaming Showcase becoming a yearly event we're seeing a healthy cadence of big titles appearing on the system. While the Meta Quest 2’s priority is unquestionably gaming, there’s also plenty of social-based experiences, fitness apps and video content from the likes of Oculus TV and YouTube VR. Rec Room is one of the standout social apps, allowing you to meet up with your friends, customise your in-game hubs and challenge friends to various games, including paintball and laser tag.

There are hundreds of separately-sold Oculus Quest games– and some free ones too – available to play with the headset, including everything from shooters to puzzle games, fitness titles to meditation apps, there truly is something for everyone, even if levels of quality – and comfort – can vary depending on what you're watching and playing. Just over 2 hours feels simultaneously a little short for serious gamers, but also impressive to say the headset is standalone. (Also, don't forget VR newbies will find more than 30 minutes to be enough in a single setting to start with.) You could only install the new Walking Dead game 4 times on the base size Quest 2 before reaching capacity. Since Saints and Sinners was one of the first Quest 2 launch-day titles, this is an indication of where file sizes are heading in the future. Oculus is also working with the developers of Assassins Creed and Splinter Cell to create VR game ports. These games take up heavy hard drive space on other consoles. That’s no bad thing, though, as the Touch Controllers are fantastic. The button placement smartly helps to simulate real-life hand movements, such as squeezing a gun trigger, giving your friends a thumbs up or catching a ball. The buttons feel great to press too and are all easy to reach. The controllers also turn on as soon as you don the headset. Previous VR experiences have been an absolute pain to set up, forcing you to turn on every device individually, so having all the Quest hardware spring into action simultaneously makes the whole process significantly easier. Games and Apps The Oculus Quest 2 VR headset is the second version of the Quest headset range. It’s similar to the original Oculus Quest in that it’s a battery-powered, standalone headset that allows you to freely roam around your physical and digital play spaces without fear of tripping over a wire. However, there are still lots of great games than can run on the Quest, with the extra grunt ensuring a smoother performance and generating more pixels to take advantage of the 1832 x 1920 per-eye resolution – that’s a higher pixel count than the more expensive Vive Cosmos and Oculus Rift S VR headsets. Initially, the Meta Quest 2 doesn’t look hugely different from its predecessor, other than the new white paint job that Meta hopes will draw in a wider audience. Meta claims there are no current plans to release alternative colour options, and such a prospect seems very unlikely now, with the Quest 3 set to launch in 2023.
