About this deal

Psalm 23 is one of the best known hymns, and can also be used as a reading for funerals. It has been sung at many important and historic events, including at the Queen's wedding. The version sang at the State Funeral was taken from the Scottish Psalter - the first book of common prayer to be published in Scotland. My Soul There Is a Country During his relatively brief tenure, much of it marked by serious illness, Day-Lewis produced poems for the Old Vic’s 150th anniversary, Oxfam’s 25th, for National Library Week, to encourage environmental awareness, for Beethoven’s bicentenary – and just one for a royal event: the poem For the Investiture of the Prince of Wales, published in the Guardian on 1 July 1969. As laureate, Marsh preferred to write poems on occasions such as the birth of a prime ministerial baby. But the fact New Zealand even has a poet laureate in 2022 suggests there is still an appetite for public poetry, even if the days of poems on the death of a queen are numbered.

We continue to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II with poems written by you, our readers. These were first published in our 2012 Diamond Jubilee Special.Occasional poetry is not always his best work, but Harrison’s use of classical verse and poetic history here is a striking contrast to Armitage’s liberalism. In 1999 Andrew Motion was appointed. Harrison was coruscating on Motion’s paean to Diana, noting of the tercentenary of the execution of Charles I that “the anniversary’s gone by with not a line / from toadies like Di-deifying Motion.” St Edward’s Crown, which will rest on the High Altar of Westminster Abbey during today’s service, is used for most modern coronations, and it is this crown which is depicted on insignias and coats of arms to denote “the Crown”. Like the State Funeral, the hymns chosen for the Queen's comittal service reflect a life that was lived with a strong and unwavering belief in the Christian faith. The music chosen reflects this, with words of hope, faith and the knowledge of a life lived for a higher purpose. All My Hope on God is Founded A local man has paid a touching tribute to Queen Elizabeth II after her death was announced last night. Edward Jenkins wrote the poem to express his heartache, saying that he became as sad as he was when his mother passed away.

But the conformism of Armitage’s royal poems strips away their artistic merit. His first royal poem followed Prince Philip’s death. “ The Patriarchs – An Elegy” portrayed a noble self-sacrifice alongside his spouse:And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. He that overcometh shall inherit all things;and I will be his God, and he shall be my son."

Of the lethal doctrinal disputes that plagued the 16th century, she said: “There is Jesus Christ; the rest is a dispute over trifles.” She loathed the concepts of thought crimes and purity tests, saying that she did not want to make “windows on men’s souls.”

As the poet Philip Larkin put it: “In times when nothing stood or grew strange, there was one constant good; she did not change.” Christina Rossetti (1830-94) was one of the Victorian era’s greatest and most influential poets. She was the younger sister (by two years) of the Pre-Raphaelite artist and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti. She composed her first poem while still a very young girl; she dictated it to her mother. It ran simply: ‘Cecilia never went to school / Without her gladiator.’ The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord." Such was the social disapproval of divorce that The Queen’s own sister Margaret had to abandon her relationship with Group Captain Peter Townsend because of his past failed marriage. Overseas, Britain still ruled a huge empire of 70 territories and had a colossal navy. The procession will take place tomorrow afternoon, and then the monarch’s coffin will rest in Westminster until her funeral on Monday.
