About this deal

Feeding more varied forages, like mixed meadow hay, haylage and chopped meadow grass during winter when horses are stabled more, will create more forage diversity and help promote a rich, diverse hindgut microbial population and optimise your horse’s hindgut health. Perfect for all horses and ponies, including those which suffer from laminitis and colic issues and those with sugar and starch intolerances. The balance of microflora within the foal’s gut can easily be unbalanced by stress, which can result in scouring and invasion by bad bacteria. Prebiotics and Yea sacc are two excellent ingredients which support the hind gut and both are designed to encourage good bacteria to flourish and improve feed (protein) utilisation. (Undesirable bacteria in the foal’s digestive tract can lead to it being unable to thrive.) When additional energy is required, this can also be supplied through sources of oil such as Ex-Selenium Oil. To help maintain a healthy hindgut, fibre should always be the first choice with oil added to boost calorie intake according to work and condition. Using fibre and oil instead of high levels of starch from cereals will help prevent excess starch reaching the hindgut and causing dysbiosis within the microbiome, which can compromise hindgut health. 4. Manage Dietary Change

In our latest blog Lisa Elliott, MSc – Equine Nutrition Solutions shares her five top tips to help maximise your horse’s hindgut health this winter. 1. Provide ad-lib good-quality forage It is perfectly ok and extremely beneficial to feed Coligone on a continual basis, although you may find after a few months that the amount fed may be reduced. 5. My horse gets stressed whilst travelling, will Coligone help? Administer a syringe prior to competing to help your horse remain calm and enable him to work at his best. Feeding Coligone, which maintains natural acid balance within the digestive tract, may assist in such circumstances. If you're feeding this product you may be interested in our new liquid feed balancer MultiVitPRO which is designed to be fed alongside Coligone Liquid.

To maximise hindgut health and good condition through the winter, forage should be fed on a truly ad-lib basis. If your horse is stabled for longer periods during the winter, then the use of slow feeders and double hay nets can help ensure that forage is always available. Additionally, if your horse is turned out then putting hay or haylage out in the field will also help to ensure they have access to a continuous supply for optimum hindgut health. 2. Increase water intake Suitable for use when training, competing & travelling or during times of stress/ill health where disturbance of the microflora has occurred within the digestive tract. Use during periods where gastric acid levels are high & saliva production is low. Your horse’s hindgut and associated microbiome is pivotal to their health and needs to be kept happy and healthy all year round whatever the season. In winter the noticeable drop in temperature brings with it a loss of nutrients from grass and the potential need to replace what is missing through feed, leading to changes in your horse’s diet and routine which can have a significant impact on the health and integrity of their hindgut.

The main aim is to ensure that the whole process is as stress free as possible and teh key to this is preparation. Correct preparation and diet can lesson the impact of the foal’s digestive system as the balance of the microflora within the foal’s gut can easily be unbalanced by stress, which can result in scouring and invasion by bad bacteria. The fibre in forage gets broken down through a process of fermentation by billions of microbes in the hindgut, collectively known as the hindgut microbiome. These provide a source of energy for your horse for work and condition, but also releases heat, keeping your horse warm from the inside out. This central heating will help maintain condition and the better quality the forage; the more heat is generated.Seaweed buffer and sodium bicarbonate help maintain healthy gastric acid levels and support a balanced digestive tract.

Contains natural active ingredients, including a Seaweed Buffer to assist with excess gastric acid. FOS & MOS prebiotics, and yea sacc to help maintain a healthy balanced digestive system. If you’re using this product, you may be interested in using our new liquid feed balancer MultiVit Pro which is designed to be fed alongside Coligone Powder. It is ok to feed medication at the same time as Coligone, but always ask your vet’s opinion. Coligone has been reported to help fussy feeders eat “Bute” and Antibiotics, the strong aniseed smell/taste covers up any sounds of medication. 11. My foal is scouring, will Coligone help? With its ability to buffer acid, Coligone Powder or Liquidcan be hugely beneficial to manage dietary change by helping to maintain a healthier hindgut pH and reducing the potential for digestive upset. Additionally, Coligone contains scientifically proven pre and probiotics to encourage a healthy hindgut microbe balance within the hindgut at times of change. Coligone is exceptionally good if given before travelling, the buffer-raft action ensures that the delicate upper area of the stomach is guarded against gastric acid irritation. It also helps with gastric acid and soothes the digestive tract whilst the horse is travelling. 6. Can I use Coligone whilst competing under FEI rules?

Administer Coligone syringe at first signs of a bloated or windy tummy, especially following gorging/over-eating of pasture. Yea sacc and MOS/FOS Prebiotics encourage hind gut fermentation and actively stimulate fibre digesters, leading to effective fibre digestion. Weaning Foals – It’s all about Damage Limitation Forage should always be the foundation of your horse’s diet, which during the winter can be provided as hay or haylage.
