About this deal

This note regards Alexandre Dumas, père, the father of Alexandre Dumas, fils (son). For the son, see Alexandre Dumas fils. Una obra, que que a la hora de que un niño se siente a leerla, podrá disfrutar de su envoltura. Aunque nunca hay que subestimar la mente de un niño, por el contrario. A whimsical tale of a girl (Georgie) who has dreamt of being Clara since seeing the ballet with her grandfather, at the age of five. When Georgie finally gets the part she is quite literally swept up into the story. The line between what is real and what isn’t gets blurred as Georgie is immersed in the ballet. Soviet ed., where they are printed in the original French with added Russian translation in editorial footnotes Andantino – Allegro vivo – Andantino sostenuto – Più andante – Allegro molto vivace – Tempo di Valse – Presto

On December 25, 2015, German television station ARD aired a new live-action adaptation of the story as part of the 6 auf einen Streich ( Six in one Stroke) television series. [8] I've never been particularly into ballet, but it's a beautiful art form and if you love the ballet I definitely recommend this.Dumas' German-to-French translation translates into English in an easier to comprehend style. Hoffman's jumps around a bit, and I know that it took me rereads to finally "get" some of what was going on. With Dumas', obviously I know the story by now, but I also felt like the narrative flowed much better, if much wordier than Hoffman's. The overall surrealness of the story is still all there, which I loved--I was concerned that it would have been changed up too much, but again, since it was a translation not an adaptation, it was faithful to the original in all forms! I love how whimsical and dreamy this graphic novel version of Hoffmann's story is. Andrewson's style, with all of its curvy lines, makes you feel like you are moving along with the characters in their fantasy adventure. Once again, readers only familiar with the ballet will discover new plot points and new inventions and will love the refocused attention on Clara. ( Ever notice how she is almost totally passive in the second half of the ballet?) Don't forget to read the author's note in which Andrewson describes her long admiration for the story! Maurice Sendak did the illustrations for this edition. I love them. They are quirky and what you expect from Maurice. Below is a synopsis based on the original 1892 libretto by Marius Petipa. The story varies from production to production, though most follow the basic outline. The names of the characters also vary. In the original Hoffmann story, the young heroine is called Marie Stahlbaum and Clara (Klärchen) is her doll's name. In the adaptation by Dumas on which Petipa based his libretto, her name is Marie Silberhaus. [5] In still other productions, such as Baryshnikov's, Clara is Clara Stahlbaum rather than Clara Silberhaus. Dancers of the SemperOperBallett (2016). Snow Pas de Deux. The story was first published in 1816 in German in Berlin by In der Realschulbuchhandlung in a volume entitled Kinder-Mährchen, Children’s Stories, which also included tales by Carl Wilhelm Contessa and Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué. The story was republished in the first volume of Hoffmann’s short story collection, Die Serapionsbrüder, The Serapion Brethren, (1819-20). The Serapion Brethren was the name of a literary club that Hoffmann formed in 1818.

The ballet was first performed in 1892 at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre, Saint Petersburg. However, it wasn't until 1954, with George Balanchine's production at the New York City Ballet, that the popularity of an annual Christmas performance started to take off. Alexandre Dumas, père (French for "father", akin to Senior in English), born Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie, was a French writer, best known for his numerous historical novels of high adventure which have made him one of the most widely read French authors in the world. Many of his novels, including The Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers, The Man in the Iron Mask, and The Vicomte de Bragelonne were serialized. Dumas also wrote plays and magazine articles, and was a prolific correspondent. Each gift comes to life and dances for Clara. The Sugarplum and her Cavalier perform a glorious Grand Pas de Deux! As the dance ends, the Sugar Plum Fairy summons the Chestnut Shell Boat to carry Clara home.

The song "Fall Out" by English band Mansun from their 1998 album Six heavily relies on the celesta theme from the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. I enjoyed reading this one aloud to my daughter. The story is short and the pacing is very good. The characters are all three dimensional and completely believable. There is a current of mystery and tension that keeps things moving along. Author Susan Adrian is particularly good at realistic dialog and familiar family and school settings. I think that the important thing reading such stories, isn't that they have to be real, but realistic though weird things happen. I like it when an author has that special skill to make also weird happenings believable. Usually I don't read fantasy, but Hoffmann is one of those authors that make me enjoy also genres I never read because he makes fantasy become real. His stories start with realism and only later he adds some magic inside. This is the marvellously strange and creative novella that Tchaikovsky's ballet is based on. And it is just as surreal as the ballet - but ballets are surreal by nature, while books needn't be. Like a darker, Continental forerunner to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. It makes zero sense, but is more than evocative enough to make up for it.

The ballet is set in Germany, Nuremberg on Christmas Eve, where family and friends have gathered in the parlor to decorate the beautiful Christmas tree in preparation for the party. Once the tree is finished, the children are summoned. They stand in awe of the tree sparkling with candles and decorations. Me ha gustado mucho conocer la historia original de El Cascanueces ✨ Un cuento creado para niños, aunque en ocasiones acoge cierto estilo siniestro y algo perturbador. La historia en sí me ha parecido muy entretenida y atrapante. In 1954, the first complete recording of the ballet was released on two LPs by Mercury Records. The cover design was by George Maas with illustrations by Dorothy Maas. [66] The music was performed by the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Antal Doráti. Doráti later re-recorded the complete ballet in stereo, with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1962 for Mercury and with the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1975 for Philips Classics. According to Mercury Records, the 1962 recording was made on 35mm magnetic film rather than audio tape, and used album cover art identical to that of the 1954 recording. [67] [68] Dorati is the only conductor so far to have made three different recordings of the complete ballet. Some critics have cited the 1975 recording as the finest ever made of the complete ballet. [69] It is also faithful to the score in employing a boys' choir in the Waltz of the Snowflakes. Many other recordings use an adult or mixed choir.
