Having given two talks on camping stoves at recent festivals, one of the key things I realised was that not everyone knows about the different types of gas canisters available for camping stoves.

Some people seem to think that certain brands give a more consistent flow and let you use the full canister better. But that’s not widely experienced, there’s no obvious consistency in which are the best/worst brands, and I don’t know of any reason that would be true (ultimately, they are just metal pots filled with gas). Not that the lighter or matches are needed as the stove uses a Piezo ignition switch which makes life a whole lot simplier, especially when you are cooking in poor weather. Specifically, with a ‘dual fuel’ stove below or one of the adaptors below, you can use multiple types of gas cylinder, which will maximise your chances of finding gas canisters all over the world, wherever you are. It’s a good way to save money too as the alternatives are often cheaper. And that simply means that you cannot trust it. After all, it’s a gamble whether or not Coleman Performance Gas will or will not work. YOU may be happy to take that gamble, but certainly am not. In cold weather camping, I need to be able to trust in, and rely on my kit. As I’ve clearly demonstrated, Coleman Performance Gas is (at best) unreliable. Anyone who is happy to go cold-weather camping with known-to-be unreliable critical kit needs to give their head a wobble. To add insult to injury, when you raise this legitimate concern with Coleman, they immediately blame you. To be fair, Ed also blamed me, and you implied blame, which raises the question of whether the pair of you works for Coleman in some capacity, and are simply trying to do a not-so-subtle PR exercise to undo brand damage.

I have learned my lesson: NEVER use Coleman Performance gas! I very strongly urge you to avoid their products, because it seems to me they may well have a quality-control issue. At best, not disclosing quite openly the limitations of their product also raises questions about their integrity. Trust is a binary thing: you either trust someone, or you don’t. Coleman’s product failed me, and I gave them the opportunity to deal with that in a constructive manner. They didn’t, and instead opted to suggest it was my failure. I wasn’t after compensation. I wasn’t after free products. I most certainly wasn’t after them trying to blame me for their product’s failure! Not just me Now the sleeve does sit right up to the edge, touching the lid so you can use this with your thumb to help steady the pot and this helps avoid touching any potentially hot sections. See here for information on these services A better handle would have been nice to have seen, something with a more strength and support as pouring a litre of boiling water and spilling this over you won’t be much fun.

However, if you’re travelling through different countries or out in the middle of nowhere, you can’t always find screw-on gas canisters. The point is that Coleman may have a QC problem, as the last time I used Performance Gas, is was well above freezing, yet it failed. Just because it’s worked for anyone before is irrelevant – the point is you cannot reply on it to work every time, within the stated limitations Coleman claims it will work.Chrome-plated pan supports and feet are rust resistant and make it easy to ensure the stove is stable on uneven ground. Once your meal is prepared, the pot has a neoprene cover with a handle that is easy to hold without the risk of burns. The pot comes with a secure lid, complete with drinking hole to keep your beverage or food warm. There are only a few manufacturers of [screw thread] canisters world wide, and they manufacture all the different brands. So two different brands often come off the same production line in Korea. Finally, the stove set up (e.g. stove model, windshield, heat reflector, heat exchangers on the pots) is a much bigger factor than the canister type.
