About this deal

Throughout the 1930s he composed the now famous poems about Macavity, Old Deuteronomy, Mr Mistoffelees and many other cats, under the name of ‘Old Possum’. This is a gorgeous book and the full colour illustrations by Axel Scheiffer are what distinguishes this volume from every other Possum's.

But I think there is more to this - here you find insight in to the world of T S Eliot- from the source of those rather special names for the cats (and dogs) to the fact that London town would not be the same with out those feline characters making it their own. S. Eliot’s beloved cat poems Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, containing beautiful original colour illustrations by Axel Scheffler. I’m not sure the CGI is entirely convincing, as these cat-human hybrids seem much more of the latter than the former (the meowing is definitely unconvincing; Dame Judi Dench throwing a ham bone made me guffaw out loud). The choice of words and the feelings you get after reading every poem about different types of cats was a pure joy! With classics such as Ted Hughes's The Iron Man and award-winners including Emma Carroll's Letters from the Lighthouse, Faber Children's Books brings you the best in picture books, young reads and classics. A few years ago I bought over 30 copies and (having annotated them) sent them out in lieu of Christmas cards.

Inside, are 64 thick creamy coloured pages, split over sections, as per the CONTENTS page at the front (1st image below refers). With the possible exception of (Aspara)gus, these names appear to be particular rather than given names of the creatures. After a Masters at Central Saint Martin's, she worked for the BBC until her lifelong passion for children's books led her to start creating them. On 5 June 2009, The Times revealed that in 1937 Eliot had composed a 34-line poem entitled "Cows" for the children of Frank Morley, a friend who, like Eliot, was a director of the publishing company Faber and Faber.I also like his sequence of pictures that play like a succession of scenes when the poems can't provide any words.
