There’s mention of flood defences and enough other references to make it clear that this is a world approaching an apocalypse, if it’s not already effectively had one. These custodians of rust are visited at unpredictable intervals from the coast by the menacing Pilot, who moves freely on a small supply vessel, delivering vital but unappetising tinned food. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. It's not often that I feel indifferent to a book for as long as I did with this one but then end up absolutely loving it, but that's exactly what happened.

Whether the absence of women is a deliberate feature of Smith’s fictional setting or coincidental, I couldn’t say. Although we see next to nothing of the world beyond the wind farm, trade continues – exemplified by the pilot’s bartering for anything of value that the old man and the boy can scavenge.

They carry out their never-ending work, scoured by wind and salt, as the waves roll, dragging strange shoals of flotsam through the turbine fields.

Spirits are high among her team at the wrap party, though Karen is less than impressed with the simpering singer.

It was unfortunate that his father had chosen to renege on his contract…as the only next of kin this duty fell to him. The occasional visit of an unpleasant pilot who supplies them with provisions also keeps his questions unanswered. Or the way the boy will be repairing a turbine, only to find an example of his father’s handiwork – something akin to a haunting in this seemingly most unmagical of settings. The distance from the present day is indicated in slyly throwaway comments like “The boy didn’t know what potatoes were. Graham Phillips has made a powerful case for advanced prediluvian “Phillips’s thorough investigations of this fascinating topic reveal not only a prehistoric lost world that is today rewriting history but also the genesis point of the stone circle culture whose greatest achievement was Stonehenge. Fast-paced gameplay and a tense initiative bidding system are combined with authentic folk traditions and occult philosophies of the era – it is a game of rifle and relic, of bayonet and belief, of machine gun and magic. At Books2Door, we believe that reading is a fundamental skill that every child should have to help improve their vocabulary, grammar, and critical thinking skills.
