About this deal

Anything above 10” is suitable for planting tomatoes in pots, which holds around 10L of soil, with 12” being a great size capable of holding around 25L of soil. A greenhouse is a great asset to any vegetable plot, enabling gardeners to make the most of the sun. Using soil in a greenhouse provides the plants more nutrients while also avoiding much of the pests and diseases outside, ensuring your plants make it through the year and provide a great harvest.

These dimensions are ideal for crops that require deep roots for maximum production while still benefitting from natural air pruning. Water retention isn’t the only problem when there isn’t enough soil, as the tomato plants may also run out of nutrients before the end of the season. Grafted plants may help where soil problems are suspected (aubergines and tomatoes are now available). If using a vertical string, gently wind the string around the top of the main stem once or twice a week as it grows. The best produced lots of large, healthy summer vegetables, while the worst made inadequate yields with pale leaves.

Simply slot the powder-coated steel poles into the plastic connectors and secure the cover over the top. The handles are reinforced with double stitching so that you can transport your grow bags without worry. If you don’t have a coldframe, place them outdoors during the day, then bring in at night for a week, then the following week, leave them out in a sheltered spot all day and night.

Tomato grow bags make the perfect, easy growing medium for greenhouse tomatoes and outdoor tomatoes. Plastic grow bags are less environmentally friendly and don’t last as long as the fabric ones, but they are the cheapest. Many argue that pots are always a better option for growing tomatoes in a greenhouse because you control the quality of soil.Tie cordon tomatoes into strings or canes and make sure climbing plants like cucumbers and melons have enough support. Use garden compost or well-rotted manure, but leave a gap around the base of the stem, to prevent rotting. Although usually healthy and vigorous, they can be weakened by powdery mildew and red spider mites, especially in greenhouses and if humidity is low. We use cucumber plants in this trial because they grow quickly, and those in good bags produce an excellent harvest. If they’re not removed, the side-shoots grow rapidly, forming a mass of long, scrambling, leafy stems that are difficult to support, produce few fruits and take up a lot of space.

Sink a 15cm (6in) pot into the ground alongside your courgette plant and water into it, so the water goes directly down to the roots. This method is a good option if you can only source smaller grow bags or there is less space in your greenhouse. Small or mini cucumber varieties produce lots of fruits, which are ready to harvest more quickly than longer ones. Greenhouses can get extremely hot in summer, so put up shading to keep temperatures lower, ideally 18–25°C (64–77°F).These leaves can be sown in late summer and used through the winter and spring months if kept in a greenhouse.

Using larger grow bags is a good option for avoiding these types of issues, although you will need to water them regularly regardless – tomato plants love their water!

With outdoor cucumbers, pinch out the growing tip once plants have developed seven leaves, to encourage side-shoots. Cucumbers are climbing or scrambling plants that can either be grown up supports or allowed to trail on the ground. Maintain structures in a clean state, particularly the glass, as we want as much light as possible to enter.
