About this deal

The ChillFlex Air conditioners need to be vented outside. When used in the cooling mode they will push warm air out of the exhaust, and in the heating mode it will be pushing out cold air. Before you get a portable unit, there are some more sustainable options to cool your home that you can try beforehand, such as using an electric fan or closing curtains. This reduces noise by running the compressor and fan more slowly. Often, the target temperature will increase automatically across the night so you don't wake up freezing cold.

If you find that your AC hose is getting hot, make sure you’re providing the shortest, straightest path for air to travel. See the photo above for an example of a hose with too many bends in it. Even if you have to extend the hose longer to make it straighter, bends trap more heat than length does. If you are going to choose this method to vent your unit, be careful to consider which wall you choose to drill into. You want a thin wall as this will be easier to cut through and anything which is reinforced is likely to need the attention of a professional, so this is probably not the best option. Measure twice and cut once; rectifying a mistake could be costly. If your air conditioner has been carried upside down or roughly handled, you will need to wait 24 hours before you start the appliance for the first time. There is an internal safety mechanism that protects the appliance from turning on if the refrigerant is disturbed. They come in various shapes and sizes, but are often described in terms of their BTU (British thermal unit) output. Our data shows that they use as much energy in an hour as a typical fridge freezer uses in one day.

All of the models we've tested are heavy (up to 30kg) and awkward to lift out of the box. If you live alone, we suggest you get someone to help you set it up, particularly if you're pregnant or elderly. It is worth noting that these units are often quite heavy and bulky, making it difficult to move them around your space. When considering your air conditioning options, it is always worth exploiting more permanent options. Our Air Conditioning Solutions Split-unit air conditioners tend to be more energy efficient, but these are more expensive and have to be permanently installed by a professional. We don't test split-unit air conditioners as they're less popular in the UK.

As sliding doors usually lead to the outdoors, they are very similar to windows and therefore make excellent options for ventilation. They are easier to seal than swinging doors as their opening is easy to cover, and so kits to set this up are readily available. Ventilation Through A Swinging Door Or Casement Windows Some models double up as a dehumidifier, meaning they serve a purpose throughout the year, not only in the summer. If you'll mostly be using this function, though, we recommend buying a dedicated dehumidifier instead. Choose a suitable model for the size of the room Those with a lower BTU in a large space will have to work harder to cool it, which is going to use more electricity.Need to be permanently mounted on an outside wall by a certified professional, so involves structural work to your home. All of the air conditioners in the table below have been put through our rigorous tests, so you can be sure they’re effective at cooling, easy to use and energy efficient. Here, a portable air conditioner is permanently vented through a hole in the wall. This is ideal for offices and shops, where lots of hot equipment is used year-round and a continuous air conditioning solution is needed. Installation Tips

Then fit the main part of the new window kit onto the end of the exhaust pipe. Which when done should look like this.Turning on for the first time. Once your Pinguino is out of the box and in its new home, please wait at least one hour before turning the air conditioner on for the first time. This is because every portable air conditioner contains a refrigerant, which can be disturbed during movement and needs to settle. They are generally heavy, unwieldy appliances. If you have reduced strength and/or live alone, you might need to get someone to help you set it up. While the electricity used to power portable air conditioners can come from renewable energy sources, this can’t be guaranteed. Electricity is generated from a mixture of burning fossil fuels, renewables, gas and nuclear, but this is mixed up in the grid. The UK is aiming to phase down the use of HFCs by 2030 by 79% for alternatives that have less of a global warming impact such as R290. You’ll find these are used more in the latest portable air conditioner models, but older machines may still use an HFC refrigerant.

Kit Contains: 1 x Roll of self-adhesive hook and loop tape (affixes to both window frame and window edge), 1 x Complete Window Zipped Seal (affixes to frame tape), 1 x Full set of instructions Fans use just a fraction of the energy that air conditioners guzzle, as they only have to rotate lightweight blades. But while they might help your room feel less muggy, they only move the air around rather than actually cooling it. The cases where you’d benefit from venting a portable air conditioner through a door aren’t common, but there are a few.
