About this deal

HUMAX products use certain open source operating system software distributed pursuant to GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE Version 2 and GNU LESSER GENERAL LICENSE Version 2.1 each as defined and published by the Free Software Foundation, Inc. The Humax FOXSAT-HDR, uses a Linux operating system and the hard drive is formatted using the EXT2 file system.

You can navigate the EPG by selecting the genre of your desired programme, which can then be viewed as a table, a list or a schedule of selected shows. You can also find a show by inputting the name.Upscaled standard-def picture quality depends on the channel, but more often than not it looks quite ropey. BBC One, for instance, looks fairly clean and sharp, but ITV1 and some of the music channels look soft and noisy. All of the channels suffer from a little pixel shimmering here and there and there’s some ringing around edges, but a lot of this is down to the quality of the original broadcasts and none of it really spoils your viewing experience anyway. Question 4) Why does Foxsat come out of standby and stays on BBC 1 London which is not even on my TV guide, as I have hidden all none HD channels? No idea why it comes on in the afternoon and stays on until I turn it off despite the next recording is not scheduled until in the evening. A Freesat Tune will only list TV and radio channels currently listed on the Freesat EPG (Electronic Programme Guide). For all other Free-To-Air (FTA) channels, a Manual Tune is required. Please note that once you perform Freesat Tune, all Freesat channels will be deleted. Select Yes and press the OK button to delete all freesat channels.

The unit’s onscreen operating system is fantastic. Designed with full colour, high-resolution graphics, friendly icons and clear text, even the biggest technophobes can make basic changes with no hassle at all. The digital TV displays are similarly clear, particularly the programme information banner (called the ‘i-plate’), which tells you everything you could possibly need to know about the current programme, including the resolution and the presence of Dolby Digital. Under Setup, you can configure the installation settings, perform a Freesat Tune, Manual Tune, update software and restore the receiver to its Factory settings. The entire front panel drops down to reveal a bank of regularly used buttons, a common interface smartcard slot and a USB port, which enables you to move MP3 and JPEG files between a pen drive/external HDD and the unit’s hard-disk, turning it into a multimedia hub. But even more impressive is that you can archive TV recordings on an external hard-disk. With the custom firmware, non-Freesat channels can be added to the Freesat EPG. Unfortunately no EPG programme information is available for non-Freesat channels. The display means, among other advantages, that the Humax becomes a useful radio tuner (for satellite radio, obviously), because you don't need to have the TV turned on to operate it.I have postulated that it may be possible to install an alternative PSU, but as I have not been afflicted by a fault such as this I have not spent the time that would be necessary to study the problem. On the other hand, if all the capacitors have perfectly flat tops, it's questionable whether you really have a PSU problem and I do not recommend just replacing the caps without further investigation. As there is a reasonable chance your unit is unrepairable, you have little to lose by sourcing a total replacement second hand, and then using that as an aid to diagnosis (swap PSUs). If the fault moves with the PSU you do indeed have a PSU fault and it may be possible to do something about it. If the fault remains with the motherboard, you have a scrap unit available for parts.
