About this deal

From the incredible imagination of Chris Smith - bestselling author and now a major new solo talent - comes an extraordinary accidental adventure for fans of Cressida Cowell and Pixar's Onward. Smiths world building was astoundingly magical and throughout every chapter I found myself transported to Parralelia and I am now a firm member of the fellowship of the bacon roll. Joel – Frankie’s annoying nerd brother who spends all his time playing computer games like Elf-Quest and just generally being really super annoying.

I absolutely adored the subtle Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit nods scattered throughout the book specially the “second breakfast”. Frankie is twelve and all teen angst, glued to her phone, her brother is a geek and this cannot be happening. From the incredible imagination of Chris Smith - bestselling author and now a major new solo talent - comes an extraordinary accidental adventure for fans of Cressida Cowell and Pixar's Onward . As a journalist he has covered national politics for Vanity Fair, where he is a contributing editor, and 9/11, "Saturday Night Live," Derek Jeter, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and New York politics, among many subjects, for New York Magazine.

With brilliant place names like Splendidness, Calmwater Bay and Fishsmelling-on-Sea, I hope there will be more adventures in Parallelia to come! Things take a turn for the worse when Grandad gets kidnapped by gnoblins (no, that is not spelt incorrectly) forcing Frankie to embark on a rescue mission across a magical realm filled with strange creatures, dangerous enemies and – worst of all – absolutely no WiFi. This is the first middle grade book I’ve picked up for 24 years and even though I’m a lot older now I can honestly say I enjoyed every second of it. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Kenneth Anderson’s illustrations bring Frankie’s quest to life through the journal pages interspersed within the story and I loved the detailed map of Parallelia at the start of the book. The chapters are short, there are diary entries, view points change, overall it is a light hearted adventure read and if you need to drop out of our world for a little while this is a fab one to enter. Our list includes some of the world’s favourite authors, illustrators and licensed brands, such as Eric Carle, Helen Oxenbury, Nadia Shireen, The Snowman, Doctor Who, Roald Dahl, Tom Fletcher, Jeff Kinney, Rick Riordan, Robin Stevens, and Jacqueline Wilson to name but a few. Very soon, she has unwittingly joined the Fellowship of the Bacon Roll and is surrounded by the brave warriors, noble sidekicks, mysterious double-crossers and conflicted villains that one would expect to see in any generic fantasy story.

Chris worked for many years as a newsreader and presenter on radio stations including Xfm and BBC Radio 1. I really loved seeing the progression from all of the characters and I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. Answering all the important questions you never knew you had, like where fairytale characters go to the toilet, this book offers plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. I found myself smiling all the way through the book and I absolutely adored the subtle Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit nods throughout, specially the “second breakfast “.

Lots of fun lines but a few too many 'aha' plot moments and too many characters (always in groups of five). Frankie really doesn’t like Parallelia when she first steps into it, but her little brother Joel loves it so much! Smith even cites the rules of the genre explicitly to readers, reminding them, for example, that every villain has a whole in their plan. The content and ambition of the show remains the same: to give every pupil the opportunity to engage with authors and illustrators in their own classroom using the power of the internet.
