About this deal

Her active imagination was the cause of many terrible nightmares, beautiful daydreams and colourful white lies. Our beauty is recognised as power, and is wielded by characters when they do not even have magic or any other ‘skills’, and that is okay.

In other words, when someone treats you badly don’t try to get revenge or even treat them badly because of it – respond to them with kindness or don’t react at all. Being Igbo, this book was profound; seeing our culture written so beautifully in text in the genre of fantasy meant everything to me for black representation in books. Daughters Of Nri explores their epic journey of self-discovery as they embark on a path back to one another. Our fullness as humans is represented, our weakness and our strengths are recognised and celebrated. We are able to exist in a world of fantasy untouched by slavery and colonialism and dream of the magic that we could have wielded in an alternate reality. There really was a lot of telling rather than showing, which is a shame considering this is beautifully written.

But in truth they are Goddesses and the ones left to defeat Eze Ochichiri, the ruler of Kingdom of Nri who is mighty and caused the Gods to leave. And because the story is African (although West African) there are enough similarities that I can relate to. I ended up bookmarking the glossary separately so I could flick to the back whenever a word came up that I didn’t know.Because of their powers and who they really are threatens the power of the ruler who happens to be a demon in denial of who his is and the role he plays both girls suffer tragedy, loss, and physical dangers.

She should be considered lucky in that sense because she had the education and wealth, some, including Naala, would dream of having. It is important for me, as an African lover of fantasy and sci-fi, to have books about African characters that aren't rooted in colonialism or slavery. The themes of the complexity of black female relationships, how weak men and patriarchy pervade and try to suppress our desires, dreams, ambition, black girl magic, beauty and our need for justice are prevalent.

I didn’t even need to check the glossary sometimes because I could almost guess the what they were talking about through the context. One thing that I appreciated about Daughters of Nri is that it’s set in 994 AD around the kingdom of Nri, which was located in present-day Nigeria. I gobbled up the story of Naala and Sanai, desperate to know where the legends and prophecies would take them next, hoping everything would turn out OK.But I found myself being slightly bored with the majority of this book and I was hoping for a bit more in terms of story progression and character development. However, Sinai’s reaction to that whole situation with Ina taught me that you shouldn’t let revenge rule your heart or let a situation anger you to the point where you become blind to anything else.
