About this deal

For waste industrial and automotive batteries you must report on NPWD once a year by 31 January in the year following the compliance period. You don’t need an arrangement with a BCS to accept these. Penalties

Density separation treatment is used to separate plastics containing brominated flame retardants (including hazardous chemicals and POPs) from uncontaminated plastics. The brominated (heavy) fraction is POPs waste. Failure to follow the regulations and carry out your duties may result in prosecution and a fine. More information The Environment Agency expects internal and external cables and wiring to contain levels of POPs, hazardous brominated flame retardants, antimony trioxide, plasticisers, and other chemicals above concentration limits. If you treat an item of WEEE that has not been assessed or identified as POPs waste, you should manage the device and treatment outputs as POPs waste as a precaution.WasteCare Group’s Managing Director, Peter Hunt gives his personal view on the new Battery Regulations A person or business that collects batteries and doesn’t sort or treat them need not be an ABTO or ABE but must follow the waste duty of care.

hazardous substances at or above hazardous waste limits – you must classify the waste as hazardous waste For waste portable batteries you must report quarterly on NPWD by the last day of April, July, October and January. You must store all waste in a way that allows easy inspection. You must maintain safe access between piles of wastes. There must always be pedestrian and vehicular access (for example, forklift) to the whole of the storage area. You should only use 19 12 04 if the plastic output contains no non-conforming materials. Mixed batteries from treating WEEEYou must store the following separately and securely from other WEEE in leakproof containers to prevent leakage and spillage:

To do this you compare the concentration of the chemical in the whole item with the legal concentration limit(s) that apply. You can find information on concentration limits and advice on how to do an assessment in the guidance: Where possible, you should locate storage areas away from watercourses and sensitive perimeters (for example, those close to public rights of way, housing or schools). The following appropriate measures apply to specific WEEE categories in addition to those in the section 4.1. Gas discharge lamps If you store batteries as a collector, your environmental permit will specify any storage conditions. Sort waste batteriesAny spillage or leakage resulting from the storage of WEEE or processed materials must be collected without delay using equipment and procedures appropriate to the type of spillage. The collected residues must be stored in a lidded, leakproof container. Any containers or surfaces affected by the spillage must be cleaned. The mixed wastes, which includes wastes produced from treating devices that are hazardous and POPs waste, is a hazardous and POPs waste. Plastic cases from display devices, including both flat panel displays and cathode ray tubes, will contain hazardous chemicals and POPs above concentration limits. These are hazardous and POPs waste. White goods like household type washing machines, tumble driers, dishwashers and cookers are not hazardous or POPs waste. If your WEEE type is not listed in this guidance you will need to assess the items yourself. Assessing items of WEEE

You must also use weatherproof covering in areas used for storage of waste containing hazardous material or fluids where this is necessary to avoid contamination of surface water. This includes, but is not necessarily limited to, the storage of: the number and size of samples your propose to take; you will need more if you handle loads of varying content An asterisk at the end of a code means the waste is hazardous. Mixed wastes, containing plastic from the treatment of WEEE devices that are hazardous and POPs waste Components such as circuit boards, plastic parts or casings may contain POPs and hazardous chemicals, such as flame retardants.

Returning your item

It is the chemical makeup of waste that determines the LoW code and if hazardous waste controls or persistent organic pollutant ( POP) controls apply to the waste. WEEE can be:
