As well as our production site in Worthing, we also have a tower brewery in our tiny Brighton brewpub, the Hand in Hand. Playmode' is a group exhibition at Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT), Lisbon that explores the connection between art and play as methods to promote new ways of seeing. Yet my morbid desire to find the darkness in this happy character is gratified when he does finally admit to a more hidden, personal drive to his art. Shrigley prefers to point to the formal structure of his work, and the philosophical humour it embodies. This volume celebrates Shrigley's absurd, deadpan sensibility through both his signature drawing style and accompanying text. Included in the presentation is David Shrigley's 'The Bell', 2007, on loan from the Arts Council Collection, UK.

Shrigley lives in the countryside in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and drives into town to work here, at a simple drawing table. Dada, invented by the generation massacred by the first world war, rejects art itself and replaces it with brutal, sick humour. Part of the joy of doing it is the therapeutic thing: I guess I’m quite an anxious person at different times. Taking Lewis Carroll's perspective of Wonderland, Shrigley enlarges objects and imbues them with curious proportions. This illustrated catalogue was published in celebration of the gallery's 25th anniversary in conjunction with the group exhibition '25 Years' at Stephen Friedman Gallery, London (25 September – 7 November 2020).

As a Brighton resident, it was an honour to be the Guest Director of Brighton Festival in 2018 and to see how much joy it gave to people. All those who make a donation to the campaign can choose an exclusive reward inspired by the project. He started his career in urban Glasgow and later lived in bohemian Brighton, but feels happy to have moved far from the madding crowd: “I live in a place where other people go on holiday, so that’s got to make me happy, right? By helping to support this campaign it gives us all a glimmer of hope that we will be able to enjoy live art events again in the city. State of the Arts' is a group exhibition at Bundeskunsthalle, Bonn which presents works that blur the boundaries of traditionally distinct artistic media.
Inside the gallery, three robo-dogs — designed by Boston Dynamics for industrial applications such as data collection, and subsequently trialled, controversially, in law enforcement — will take up residence in a purpose-built art studio, where they will paint every day for the duration of the Triennial. Shrigley grew up in Leicestershire, where his dad was an electrical engineer and his mum a computer programmer.
