Filled with sand the Wavemaster 2XL Pro comes in at a hefty 120kg; this paired with the tapered base and energy-absorbing core means that even heavier and more experienced strikers will struggle to move it.
We would recommend filling the base with sand rather than water as it will make it much more sturdy but other than having to fill the base we cannot really offer any criticism of this punch bag. If you have the budget then go for the best – you won’t need to buy another. The height is adjustable with three different heights to choose from. Ranging between 161cm and 182cm it allows you to practice at a height comfortable to you or even at a height to prepare for an upcoming opponent. The base is very sturdy and can be filled with water or sand, with the former providing 110kg of weight which is likely more than enough to hold the Strikeman Pro steady. If you need your punching bag for elbows, knees or even takedowns then the VS1 is perfectly equipped for that as the most flexible bag on our list. It also features top handles which makes it even easier to perform those knee strikes. The only negative to the VS1 is the price as it is one of the more expensive punching bags in our top 10 – but if you need an all round sparring partner that allows you to work on standing and groundwork then the VS1 is ideal. Standing at 5’7ft (175cm) tall it is not quite as tall, but it provides just as imposing of a figure when assembled and ready for use. At its core, however, each person will have different uses and expectations when it comes to purchasing a free standing bag. Ensure you are analysing what you are trying to get not only from your workouts but also from your punching bag. They allow the user to focus more on cardio, with greater flexibility in movement around the bag, as well as requiring less space and installation hassle. This combination makes free standing bags a must not only for the boxing or MMA enthusiast but also for anyone wanting to really up their cardio game. Whilst they may not be quite as sturdy or long-lasting as the higher-end hanging bags, they more than make up for that with greater variability, a wider array of options and being far more affordable. The base is smaller than many of the other models we tested but it seems to perform well and provide a good degree of stability. We filled ours with water and this was fine, but for extra stability you can of course use sand.The solidity of this bag means that even the most powerful of strikes will struggle to move the bag too much and even though the base is narrow, the stability of this bag is excellent. When filled with sand it has a base weight of 82.5kg and Dripex recommend using sand rather than water so you should factor this in to the cost. Top of our list is a Century product and comes in the form of the colossal Wavemaster XXL. Standing at 175cm and with a diameter of 45cm, this standalone punchbag actually has the largest striking surface area of all free-standing punchbags in the UK. The material is not harsh at all so it can be used with or without training gloves and as the most lifelike bag on our list it is great to use to improve the accuracy of your strikes – whether that is with hands or feet. You can also adjust the height of BOB pretty easily between 60 inches and 78 inches tall so you can train for your next opponent based on their height or yours.

One made from high-quality leather tends to be easier on the eye, but it will also be more durable and comfortable to strike. It’s a similar story for synthetic leather punchbags, only these tend to cost less. If you're interested in taking up combat sports as a training discipline, there are a handful of required tools to get your workouts into fighting shape. Outside of boxing gloves, another must-own is a proper punching bag. After all, what's the sense of throwing a punch if there's no target to receive the blow?
