About this deal

The settings are so authentic 1950s and although it is shot in colour it seems black and white as the scenes are dreary, which adds to the ambience. I like to check all my purchases when they arrive as it might be a while before I get to watch them in full. Sporting his pipe that seems a nod to Sherlock Holmes, the pragmatic and refined Maigret investigates murders in his singular unhurried manner and inevitably discovers the truth. Against a backdrop of 1950s Paris and the surrounding French countryside, these original feature-length films pay homage to one of the most brilliant detective minds of the twentieth century. minutes) Commentators include Rowen Atkinson (plays Maigret), Ashley Pearce (director episode 1), Shawn Dingwall (plays Inspector Junvier), Leo Staar (plays Inspector LaPointe), John Simenon (producer, son of author George Simenon), Dominic Hyman (production designer) and Ulrike Munch (editor episode 1).

On assignment in the provinces, Maigret acts on a tip to find a distinguished judge dragging a corpse out of his house, presumably to dump in the sea. Instead, the series got locked into a series of drab-looking interiors, cheaply designed by Chris Wilkinson and unimaginatively shot by directors James Cellan Jones and John Glenister. There are 12 episodes and of course some are weaker than others but the acting is always good even in the small parts and it looks great. The DVD set includes two discs with two episodes and bonus material on each; the episodes are: Maigret Sets a Trap Disc 1-1; Maigret’s Dead Man Disc 1-2; Night at the Crossroads Disc 2-1; and, Maigret in Montmartre Disc 2-2.

I think the Atkinson version was just awful, though it gets points for possibly bringing new readers to a terrific author.

Granada had started the trend with their outstanding Sherlock Holmes series starring Jeremy Brett, LWT followed it up with their equally definitive Poirot with David Suchet, while Central gave us my personal favourite, the John Thaw Morse series, and the less iconic but nonetheless highly entertaining Cadfael with Derek Jacobi in the lead. Cremer's Maigret is taciturn and intense, preferring to wait silently while people reveal themselves, riding his men hard at times, especially the often incompetent officers he encounters outside of Paris; and his Paris (Prague) is always gray or pitch black, dark wet streets, his pipe glowing. The first two originally aired in March and December of 2016; the last two in April and December of 2017. scloyd : The Bruno Cremer led Maigret with English subtitles is available for streaming on MHz Choice. The direction, now by Nicholas Renton, Stuart Burge, and John Strickland greatly improves turning each episode into a superbly realised mini-movie, true to the spirit and the complexities of Simenon's wonderful novels. The relationship between actors who assume the roles of associate investigators, or victims, or witnesses, are convincing.
