About this deal

Many garments have special pleats and features that are heat-set to keep their shape forever. If you use heat to dye these items, it can damage these features and the garment itself. Beige – almost any “antiqued” version of a color can be created from a beige base. Neons are unlikely, but you can use a dusty pink using a bit of red dye, a mossy green using some spring green dye, etc. Beige is similar to mixing a very light brown, it will tone down any dye color slightly and make it appear slightly muddy and less intense. Yellow – a great base for green (when combined with blue) or orange (when combined with red). Lighter yellows can also occasionally be ‘overpowered’ with enough blue dye to create a slightly greenish-tinted dark navy blue, for example, although this isn’t always possible. Add your color remover to the water, and mix it well with stainless steel tongs. Depending on how heavy your fabric is, you can use a suitable amount of color remover as recommended by the box. Kat has been sewing since her feet could reach the pedals, starting with quilts she made with her mom and eventually graduating to garments. She now makes everything she wears, occasionally teaches classes, and shares her projects on social media. Highlights include her wedding dress, shoemaking, and a love for almost any fabric that comes in hot pink! Read more…

In other cases – like an old high school t-shirt or hoodie – the printing is done using screen printing ink which (in most cases) has a polymer base and sits on the surface of the shirt. This ink can sometimes absorb polyester dyes, but it won’t absorb dyes meant for cotton, silk, or wool. This means that if you overdye a yellow shirt with a red print on it in blue dye, the result will be a green shirt with the same red print. As with any overdye project, if you’re aiming for a particular color on a garment like this, it’s always best to test first! Although a dye may not absorb into a polymer-based ink, it may lightly stain the ink enough to be noticeable. Tips for overdyeing t-shirts, hoodies, and jeans: Disperse dyes are designed to react chemically with polyester, so you need to use a hot dye bath to activate the dye and allow the fabric to soak up the colors. 2. Machine Dye Pods Make a red-brown dye using elderberries, red onion skin, pomegranates, beets, bamboo, or dried hibiscus flowers.Because of this, polyester is very difficult to dye because it naturally won’t absorb the dye very well. If the dye isn’t specially formulated to work with synthetic fabrics, the colors won’t show up well, and the result isn’t permanent. The dyeing process usually takes from 30 minutes to an hour. “So it can be a bit of a tedious experiment sitting over pot constantly stirring a garment,” she says. Wet your fabric thoroughly and remove any excess water. Add your fabric to the pot until the fabric is completely submerged in water, and stir thoroughly and occasionally for about 20 minutes. You will see that the color starts to become lighter and lighter, but your fabric will still look a bit darker when it is wet.

For some colors, you will have to do a little bit of color mixing before achieving your desired result. But you can totally experiment and have fun with this process to achieve a brand new look for your fabric! Batch dyes can process different types of fibres and garments in one go, but Wright cautions, “Each fabric’s dye absorption produces the final colour and it will vary from the chart.” To ensure customers aren’t disappointed they offer reprocessing at no extra charge. Natural dyes can be a good option if you’re wary of chemical dyes, but there are more variables at play. “Natural dyeing involves firstly using a mordant to prepare your fibre, then using colour extracted from seeds, bark, leaves, fruits, wood or other natural materials to dye the fibre,” says Kate Wilkins, the founder of Studio Tinta. (A mordant is a substance used to set dyes on fabrics such as aluminium acetate.) Rosemary Wright, the owner of Cullachange, a direct-to-consumer re-dyeing service in Sydney. How to choose the right dye color when overdyeing:

In natural dyeing, Overdyeing is used to create colors with dyes that might interact badly with each other if they were mixed directly, and it’s also used to update colors that fade over time. Is it easy to overdye fabric and clothes? Prepare the color remover solution by filling up a stainless steel pot ¾ of the way with water, or until the water is enough to cover your fabric. Heat up the water until it starts to generate small bubbles, then lower the heat to simmer (don’t boil the water). Iron is an effective mordant but will darken the end result with a brownish tint. Use iron for earth tone results. To create an iron bath, boil a few old nails in a large pot of water.
