This morning, at its annual conference in Seattle, the American Library Association gave out its prizes for children's and young adult literature. Its awards include the prestigious Caldecott and Newbery medals. NPR's Lynn Neary reports. Tara: 4 stars. I found the facts, the information, fascinating. The cute-sy stuff in between just okay. This resource helps your children identify where capital letters and full stops are located within an excerpt from the story. NEARY: Medina loves the idea that her book will always have the stamp of the Newbery on its cover and that winning the medal means it will be around for a long time. I’ve loved lighthouses since I was a girl, and I know I would have pored over this book many times during preschool and early elementary grade ages. I enjoyed viewing the lighthouse rooms and their contents. Entrancing and enchanting. As a child the pictures could have kept me captivated for long periods of time.

A young boy and his grandfather cannot communicate through words due to language differences. They discover a shared love for art, transforming their interactions from frustrating silence to vibrant storytelling. Families can talk about what it's like to live in a lighthouse, as shown in Hello Lighthouse. Does it look like fun or seem too hard? What might happen to boats if there was no lighthouse? I thought this was a delight to read and rather interesting too. I don’t think I could live in a place where water beats against the sides of my house and you are so cut off from help. This is the first of two books great for retelling a story by JonArno Lawson. Over the Shop, told without words, captures how a young girl, her grandmother, and an enthusiastic couple rejuvenate a dilapidated apartment above a small shop. I did not find what is the point of this book. Just to tell about a lighthouse? There was no plot, no story, no characters. Too many details that are not making any difference.
