About this deal

The Roman gladius was the sword that had conquered the world. Interestingly, the Romans likely adopted the short sword from their enemies and used them in building an empire. The Spanish Origins of the Gladius Sword

The blade of the Sica sword is easily its most distinguishing characteristic. It’s a single or double-edge blade that curves gradually or sharply, depending on the design, in the last third of the blade. The blade of the Sica is full tang, meaning that it goes inside the handle as well. The Fulham gladius or Mainz-Fulham gladius was a Roman sword that was used after Aulus Plautius' invasion of Britain in 43 AD. [24] The Romans used it until the end of the 1st century. The Fulham gladius has a triangular tip. The length of the blade is 50–55cm (20–22in). The length of the sword is 65–70cm (26–28in). The width of the blade is 6cm (2.4in). The swords weighs 700g (1.5lb) (wooden hilt). [25] [26] A full size replica can be seen at Fulham Palace, Fulham. Below are the weapons used by the gladiators or their foes in the amphitheatres of Rome. Swords Gladius (sword)

But the story of the Gladiator Spiculus is what makes it even more special. Adored by the crowds that attended the Gladiator Games, this sword was a personal favorite of the Roman Emperor Nero. Spiculus was handsomely rewarded for his fighting skills and received gifts and palaces from the emperor. Even when Nero tried to kill him when he learned that he would be sentenced to death, Spiculus managed to escape his fate. Even ancient Greek writings from the father of history, Herodotus himself, talked about the Thracians and Illyrians and their very unique swords.

The lancea was a short javelin used to throw easily without having to carry to much weight around. Pilum (spear/javelin) The word gladius acquired a general meaning as any type of sword. This use appears as early as the 1st century AD in the Biography of Alexander the Great by Quintus Curtius Rufus. [19] The republican authors, however, appear to mean a specific type of sword, which is now known from archaeology to have had variants. What you wore depended on where you came from

The Roman sword had a spherical pommel, ivory or wooden hilt, and a small wooden guard. Ergonomically designed, the handgrip measured between 7 to 10 centimeters, close to the average width of a male hand. Most sword scabbards were organic, made from wood, and covered in leather. Some ceremonial gladius had a wooden scabbard decorated in silver and gold. Facts About the Roman Sword The Sica is one of the many weapons that gladiators used, often by Thraex, gladiators from Thracia. These gladiators were often heavily geared with a small rectangular shield and a curved Sica sword. The Sica proved to be a lifesaver just as often as a lifetaker. The Vetulonian sword was crafted by the pattern welding process from five blooms reduced at a temperature of 1,163°C (2,125°F). Five strips of varying carbon content were created. A central core of the sword contained the highest: 0.15–0.25% carbon. On its edges were placed four strips of low-carbon steel, 0.05–0.07%, and the whole thing was welded together by forging on the pattern of hammer blows. A blow increased the temperature sufficiently to produce a friction weld at that spot. Forging continued until the steel was cold, producing some central annealing. The sword was 58cm (23in) long. [17]

Our Roman Gladiator Sword is crafted in the world famous Art Gladius factory in Toledo, Spain. The gilded hilt is heavily adorned with Roman style reliefs and features the letters SPQR (Senātus Populus que Rōmānus) on the guard. The large pommel is topped with an Imperial Eagle (Aquila). The Pompeii style stainless steel blade is richly adorned with engravings. This sword is designed for display only. The Roman soldiers provided their own gladius sword for service, most probably bought from retiring soldiers or military suppliers. Hence, they also personalized their blades and scabbards to indicate ownership. Manufacturers tended to stamp sword blades, but individual sword owners marked them differently with some scratching their name into the metal or forming the letters out of a series of dots. The hilt of a Roman sword was the capulus. It was often ornate, especially the sword-hilts of officers and dignitaries. Several European museums have at least one gladius in their collection, with the Sword of Tiberius as the most famous sword to have survived from the Roman world. Still, the gladius remains relevant to modern times as it is often seen in films and stage combats. In Pop Culture The Roman gladius was a type of short sword with a double-edged blade. All of them were excellent combat weapons, but the Pompeii gladius serves as the model of several replicas today. Here are the unique characteristics of the short sword: Metal and Construction

Here we will cover as many, if not all of the gladiator weapons commonly used in the Roman amphitheatres. Weapons As the popularity of gladiator battles grew, new varieties of warrior emerged. No longer did they dress according to where they came from. Now gladiators were identified by the sorts of armour and weapon they carried.Livius, Titus. "The History of Rome, Vol. II". 7.10. Gladiator battles were held at huge venues called amphitheatres. “Arena”, the word we use for this type of building today, actually referred to the floor of the amphitheatre that was covered in sand to soak up all the spilt blood. The Roman short sword was further reduced to around 42 to 55 centimeters, making it a lighter and faster weapon. The Pompeii gladius would serve the Roman Army until the mid-2nd century CE before the longer sword spatha replaced it.
