About this deal

Thank you to Macmillan-Tor/Forge, Tor Books and Macmillan audio and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. It's safe to say that I love this story with the same passion, and frankly, for the same reasons, that I love The Princess Bride. She bent her head down against his shoulder and he reached his arm across his body to hold her close.

There isn’t a weak link in the bunch; each character contributes something both entertaining and endearing to the dynamic. Kingfisher is delivering all the classic Fantasy Quest tropes I adore, while glazing the entire tale with a healthy layer of humor. Actually, she’s thirty - even though her naïveté would have fit a teenager (but I’ll let that slide since she’s accompanied by a no-nonsense old woman who makes up for Marra’s mental youth). In the beginning, Marra isn't compelling, and the story starts in a way that makes you think it's going to be Horror, and ultimately isn't, which is going to be either a pro or a contra depending on whether you like Horror or not. This book is a modern classic and belongs alongside The Last Unicorn and Spinning Silver on your shelf. Naturally, she decides to take matters into her own hands with the help of the dust wife, who just happens to have a chicken possessed by a demon. Marra was broken hearted when Damia went away to marry the Prince from the massive kingdom across the channel, and it was if she knew she would never see her sister alive ever again. A delightful solitary story (as far as I’m aware this is not sprawling into a series or shared universe) about a kind princess in an unkind world.

Marra — a shy, convent-raised, third-born daughter — is relieved not to be married off for the sake of her parents’ throne. She wants to save her sister Kania from her husband, the king of the Northern Kingdom, who is beating her—and to do so she'll need the help of a few folks who'll accompany her along her quest.when she realizes that she is the only one who will do something - anything - to avenge her dead sister and save her living one, she takes matters into her own hands: she is going to murder the cruel prince. Now the second-born daughter, Kania, is married to that very same Prince and Marra suspects that he is hurting her. When the cattle ran out and the deer were gone, they ate the horses, and when the horses were gone, they ate the dogs.
