About this deal

There are echoes of silent classic The General when Buster Keaton puts in an appearance as the (talking!

Jules Verne – Around the World in Eighty Days, a 4-part drama adaptation in 2010 by Terry James and directed by Janet Whittaker for BBC Radio 7 (now BBC Radio 4 Extra), starred Leslie Phillips as Phileas Fogg, Yves Aubert as Passepartout and Jim Broadbent as Sergeant Fix.In San Francisco, they board a transcontinental train to New York, encountering several obstacles along the way: a herd of bison crossing the tracks, a failing suspension bridge and a band of Sioux warriors ambushing the train. But even the Le Tour de monde article was not entirely original; it cites in its bibliography the Nouvelles Annales des Voyages, de la Géographie, de l'Histoire et de l'Archéologie (August 1869), which also contains the title Around the World in Eighty Days in its contents page. American William Perry Fogg traveled the world, describing his tour in a series of letters to The Cleveland Leader newspaper, entitled, Round the World: Letters from Japan, China, India, and Egypt (1872).

Going north, you will hardly have any problems getting into Nepal, though crossing into Tibet will require some bureaucracy. For those who want to replicate Fogg's journey more faithfully, Cunard's Queen Victoria occasionally makes a stop in Cobh (the modern name of Queenstown) on the way to Southampton, where you can get off and catch a train to Dublin (with a train change in Cork). This means that you will have to hitchhike on a freight train for the leg between Salt Lake City and Omaha if you want to replicate the route taken by Fogg. Despite the pressure of time, Fogg and co seem to be taking the scenic route, as the journey from Calcutta to Hong Kong finds their boat cruising along the Chao Praya River in Thailand, past the Grand Palace of Bangkok. The fabulously wealthy Victorian gentleman Phileas Fogg wagers his life's fortune that he can circumnavigate the globe in just 80 days. Oddly, they've soon drifted northwest of Paris, passing above Chateau de Vigny in the town of Vigny, Val d'Oise, built in 1500 and altogether more martial in appearance than Maintenon.

Presented simultaneously across two major London arts institutions, the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) and the South London Gallery (SLG), Around the World in Eighty Days is a unique exhibition that takes Jules Verne’s popular novel Around the World in Eighty Days as a starting point to consider art, history and the social construction of places, spaces and identities from both a global and local perspective. From Suez (Cairo) to Mumbai, Fogg and Passepartout disembark in a steamer across the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. A programme of screenings, lectures and discussions accompanies Around the World in Eighty Days as well as a publication, which functions as travel book, reader and exhibition catalogue. In 2009, twelve celebrities performed a relay version of the journey for the BBC Children in Need charity appeal. The tavern has lots to offer including traditional pub food, exclusive cocktails, and even a weekly Cockney singalong.
