About this deal

Taking their rescue dog Tina with them, Nicky plans to distract Kenny from the up and coming visit from their estranged mother through a little adventure on the moors. It does something all too rare (and here it reminded me of Brooks and Almond again): It is entirely honest. Part of a series, but this is the first one I've read so it can be read independently of the others. Based on an idea by McGowan, he and Nadin took turns writing alternating chapters, with McGowan writing as the male character and Nadin as the female.

He has lectured on creative writing at London Metropolitan University, Royal Holloway University of London, and The Faber Academy. The shortlists for the last two years have shown some of the effects of this: we’ve had several non-white authors shortlisted, and this year finally saw a Black British author (Dean Atta) make it to the shortlist. I have even talked the head into a little revamp of the library so that we can display them properly! Nicky’s last act of care for Kenny is his final act of storytelling, and his picture of Tina seeking Kenny out in heaven.

however i did not enjoy the ending as much as the other reviews i have read did, i thought it was a bit random however if this was the final in a series i could see you being pleased with the reuniting of the mum and children and the epilogue of afterwards? On another level, the book is about the unshakeable love between two brothers, one of them with special needs, after enduring family break-up, poverty, bullying and cruelty. McGowan penned approximately twenty of the titles in the series, which contains continuous adventure stories with a single set of main characters to take readers through the primary school years.

From the award winning and Carnegie nominated Anthony McGowan, this is already set to be another best seller. It's the last in the series of four short books (Brock, Pike, and Rook come before it) about two brothers - Kenny (who has special needs) and Nicky. Yesterday a parent came over to tell me how impressed she was by the book fair and that you did a fabulous job of selling the books to the children first. This is the first hint that in this book the tables will be turned: while Nicky has always been the carer, in Lark it’s ultimately Kenny who has to care for his brother. The boys, whose family life has been rocky, but whose bond with each other is powerful, are touching and brave and also ordinary. In How To Teach Philosophy to Your Dog: A Quirky Introduction to the Big Questions in Philosophy (2019), McGowan utilized his PhD in philosophy in examining the teachings of history's most renowned philosophers, which he presented in a series of 'conversations' between himself and his dog, Monty. There is no disguising the real peril of their predicament and given Anthony McGowan's avoidance of unrealistic happy ever afters, I raced to the end with my heart in my mouth. I haven't charted out my visits for the summer term, but I'm sure there are several in the south) and thanks so much for being so fantastic! The book was longlisted for the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize [13] and the Carnegie Medal and shortlisted for the Booktrust Teenage Prize and the Young Minds Book Award.
