About this deal

The game will proceed this way for seven rounds at which point players gain victory points for gold, terrain cards, resources removed from their supply board, trained families and fruit bats. Points are deducted for missing food. The player with the most points is the winner. Final Thoughts Finally, a start player is determined by some means, given the Start Player marker, and you’re ready to begin. A Round of Play

Each player gets a supply board and fills it with their trees, fruit, families, animals and goats. The night card starts empty and stays nearby. Players also get a Village card and place it under their board, and this card is seeded with a family token. You can have an unlimited number of rows under your board, but no more than 4 cards in any row. The three workers (meeples) in their color are placed near the board, and the three player aid cards should be kept nearby. You see, Atiwa is a game about bats. I mean, if you want to be pedantic, it’s about developing a small community in the Atiwa Range area of Ghana. But really it’s about bats. Loads and loads of outrageously cute bat meeples. I’m a little bit in love with the bats. As I mentioned above, Atiwa isn’t anything as like as heavy as A Feast For Odin, and while it’s lighter than Hallertau, there are plenty of familial traits passed down through its genes.

Good to know: A single colony of 150,000 fruit bats can contribute to the reforestation of 800 ha of forest within a year! Each round also has a breeding phase which is good to try and make the best of with you needing a certain token requirement to get 1 more. Combining this with your supply board income is really essential to doing well compared to the other players as these are acting as ’free’ actions to get more tokens off your board and get your economy and engine going. There have been some runaway leader problems in this game when people haven’t put out enough families in the game and start to fall behind in terms of gold income or taking enough terrain cards to make sure they can collect their income and not waste it. The games replayability is ok with each games terrain cards providing a new puzzle to work with but you are essentially doing the same actions each game with the same supply board. I think the game would benefit from an expansion down the line just to bring some new elements to the game or it may become a little repetitive after 10 or so plays. The game ends after 7 rounds so is easy to see coming and plan ahead for.

About Dale Yu

In the work phase, players will be placing workers to perform a variety of different actions such as gaining new resources (from their supply board), acquiring new terrain and location tiles (to build up their tableau) and spending resources. Resources (fruit, wild animals, goats and trees) are taken from your own player supply board and new terrain and locations tiles are placed below your player board. Tiles will depict a range of different icons ranging from the above mentioned resources to bats to houses. The shown resource can be placed on the respective space. There are some basic placement rules about placing resources, wild animals and bats in certain locations which I will not go into detail here. I have now played Atiwa as a solo experience, with 2 players, and at the max 4 player count. At all levels, the game moves along briskly and is easy to teach due to the straightforward iconography and included player aids. I really liked the fixed economy that each player has on their personal boards and how moving one item off and onto your cards opened up income of another type during a later phase of the game.

I honestly can’t think of even a single negative thing to say about Atiwa. The game play is top notch and the components are excellent. They even gave me plenty of plastic bags inside the box, so I can’t even grouse about that. It’s just an all around fantastic game. In fact, I think that out of all of the new games I’ve experienced over this past year, it’s probably my favorite one. is a huge forest reserve with 17,400 ha of evergreen forest, which is rare even for Ghana. There are also mineral resources here, such as gold, diamonds, white alumina and bauxite. But that is not what this game is about. Per the rules: “The Atiwa Range is a region of southeastern Ghana in Africa consisting of steep-sided hills with rather flat summits. A large portion of the range comprises an evergreen forest reserve, which is home to many endangered species. However, logging and hunting for bushmeat, as well as mining for gold and bauxite, are putting the reserve under a lot of pressure. Atiwa is played over a total of seven rounds. At the beginning of the game, all the Action tiles will be in their rightmost positions. But, at the beginning of subsequent rounds, the leftmost one will move one space to the left. This has the effect of changing up the available actions from one round to the next. Each Action tile represents a single action of a two action structure: the action shown on the tile and the pre-printed action that is visible just beneath it. There are other stand alone actions dotted all over the board aside from the ones coupled to the Action tiles.Ditching the cards was the genius move from Uwe with this game. Without having to manage a hand of cards with various professions, skills, bonuses or what have you, it leaves you free to concentrate on the table in front of you, and in turn it makes it a much more accessible game. I took Atiwa to my local game group and played with three others who’d never even touched an Uwe Rosenberg game before. Within one round, everybody understood what was going on, and how to get what they wanted, more or less. For that reason alone it usurps Nusfjord from the top of my ‘ easier Uwe worker-placement game to teach to a group‘ list. It’s a pretty niche list, granted, but that position is a lofty one. Good to know: A single colony of 150,000 fruit bats (AKA flying foxes) can contribute to the reforestation of 800 ha of forest within a year! As this game is on the lighter end of the WFWP games – we’re definitely staying within the 30 min / player suggested time frame. This game doesn’t have much in the sense of alternate setups. There is one part of the board that changes based on player count; but this is mostly to even out the number of action spaces. The six round boards are shuffled each game, and they slide along during the game – but otherwise, there isn’t much else that changes. For me, this is no problem. Firstly, I still haven’t proved to have a great grasp of how to succeed in the game consistently. Second, the game design is solid to me, and I don’t need a different setup each time I play the game for it to provide an interesting challenge. Third, the random deal of the initial landscape cards can definitely change how you might approach the game based on what things you have room to store… After my first few plays, Atiwa is highly recommended – probably supplanting Nusfjord as my favorite light UFWP game. There are several different ways to score points in this game with you highly likely scoring in all the available categories but how you play the game will decide where you score the most. You can have a focus on hoarding gold and taking actions to get gold. This will mean that you are not building many locations but instead looking for terrain cards that have spaces to hold families. Also, getting several terrain cards that have the nature icon will mean you can collect a lot of gold with one worker placement action to boost this strategy further. These spaces are often fought for during the later rounds so you will need to make sure that you are as close to the start player as possible if you go for this strategy.
