And the pace was... odd. I can't wrap my finger around it but there was something that was bugging me. Y es gay. You know what? Actually every book by this author I have read has basically the same MC but in a different setting. And I have read, like, three and dnf-ed one. Which is not looking good. Another aspect I want to mention is the grip Ben‘s characters have on me, I would die for them. Such loveable and flawed characters and I shall never stop simping for love interests with a tragic past and long hair, literally weak in the knees for them

The main aspect I really love about this book and which i really grew to already appreciate in book one is how easy these books are on you as a reader.My feelings about this book are complicated. On the one hand, I like Ben Alderson as a person. I follow him on Tiktok and I was genuinely excited for him to be publishing. On the other hand, I really didn't like this book. I want to but I just can't. It has been many years since the vampiric disease spread wildly across Darkmourn, making humans a rarity. And protection from the undead comes at a cost, one that Arlo is forced to pay when he is stolen by the Prince of Death.

The NSFW content in this is…terrible. Why on earth do they walk out of a wedding mid-ceremony to hook up in a public hallway, only to re-emerge afterwards not caring if everyone around them knows what they did? It’s at the wedding of a family member! What! You’re so gross! Not to mention that out of all the times they do hook up, there isn't a single instance where they practice safe sex. It isn't a requirement, because this is fiction, but I don't have to like it, either.One of the other main offputs I had with this book was how the whole ending was done. There were so many things that I didn't like about it that before the ending arc started, I was going to give this book three stars. It was that bad. First, the betrayals. I understand Gildir and Frila, as it was clear from the beginning that we were never supposed to like them, however Myrinn's betrayal was just so unnecessary. With the amount of time the author put into us liking Myrinn, the betrayal at the end just felt cheap. I'm all for plot twists, but this one wasn't well done. All this trying to do proper world building while every emotional climax being underwhelming, doesn't work well. I believe this was my first book with elves so I was more nervous as to whether I would like it or not but my worries melted away as I kept reading. This book hooked me in and didn’t let me go!!
