About this deal

The characters are witty and real, their dilemmas are poignant, and Lisa Jewell ties the whole thing together with enough romance to satisfy even the most jaded reader. I highly recommend A FRIEND OF THE FAMILY, I would encourage everyone to put this at the top of their summer reading list. With that being said after I looked up the synopsis and realized it was not a thriller, I was able to focus a little bit more on the actual story and not waiting for what was coming.

The only reason I didn’t give it one star is because I did finish it so either I am a fool or it deserves two stars for tricking me into hanging in there. This refreshing look into the inner workings of brothers is a huge leap forward and something I was thrilled to see.Lisa is a New York Times and Sunday Times number one bestselling author who has been published worldwide in over twenty-five languages.

The only criticism I have of A FRIEND OF THE FAMILY, is that a bit of the information about pregnancy was slightly inaccurate (such as she states that the pregnant character was unable to take any medications, not even Tylenol or a cough lozenge). Sean was once a spoiled little brother, who hits it big with his first book, and he has the perfect girlfriend. The dilemmas weren't solved immediately, nor in the most obvious way, but the solutions are ultimately satisfying and uplifting. This is a used book - there is no escaping the fact it has been read by someone else and it will show signs of wear and previous use. The character for whom the book is titled appears so infrequently the first half of the book I kept wondering why he is even in the story.

Since then she has published another twenty-one novels, most lately a number of dark psychological thrillers, including Then She Was Gone, The Family Upstairs and None of This is True.

Lisa Jewell's first novel, Ralph’s Party, was published in 1999 and was the best-selling debut novel of the year. You know I adore Lisa Jewell books but in her old books I don't get why she had to put really dumb guys in her books. With barely ten pages to go everything is going perfectly and gets tied up witb a neat bow just as Gervase decide's to disappear from the London family home. He does this thing where he holds their hands and looks deep into their eyes and they go all gooey inside and wind up spilling everything to him. It’s an enjoyable easy listen to what is a family drama set with unconventional parents and their 3 sons and associated relationships.

I still gave it 3 stars because in the end I kind of understood the story and thought it was kind of okay. Since then she has written another twenty novels, most recently a number of dark psychological thrillers, including The Girls, Then She Was Gone, The Family Upstairs and The Night She Disappeared. One of these brothers was REALLY REALLY dumb and it made me crazy but at the end he sorted everything out, thank god! The author does a great job describing the characters, so that you get a good rounded sense of each one and even wish you were a "friend of [their] family.I loved Ralph's Party and Thirtysomething -- cute chick novels -- but her writing took some impressive proportions with One-Hit Wonder, and she has outdone herself with A Friend of the Family. It is a great anytime read, but if anything a "great busy person read," because the chapters are short. The female characters are only there as plot devices and to cause issues in the lives of the male characters. I didn’t realize at first it was released in 2004, which could have something to do with the difference in writing and style and even subject matter. I just love how Lisa Jewell feeds us tiny morsels at a time to keep our attention and curiosity so that we keep flicking those pages.
