How Should the Bulb Be From the Turtle
There really is no right and wrong here. I’ve seen lots of different Dragons and different ages that all have totally unique basking behaviour. All living things on the surface of the planet are exposed to ultraviolet light to some extent. Diffused and reflected UVB will penetrate into deep shade and even nocturnal creatures may be exposed to small amounts whilst hidden in their daytime retreats, particularly in locations where daytime UVB levels are high. Rather than living inside their shells, turtles’ shells are an extension of their ribs and form part of the animals’ skeletons. The turtle family includes tortoises and terrapins, although when we talk about pet turtles, we are usually referring to aquatic turtles. This lamp is not suitable for use with dimming controls or thermostats. It can be used with a safety thermal cut out (which switches the lamp off until reset manually, if the vivarium exceeds a designated temperature), but regular switching will shorten lamp life. Remember that the lamp will take up to 15 minutes to re-light after switching off. Basking lamps are a popular type of vivarium lighting for many reptiles. In the wild many diurnal reptiles like to bask in the sun and a basking lamp (or basking spot) will mimic this environment. The Fluker’s Sun Dome is another large lamp similar to the Zilla dome. It’s very deep and is designed to reflect light, and target it to a certain spot in the vivarium. This is great for setting up a “basking spot.” Will something bad happen to my turtle if I forget to turn the lamps on? If you forget for only one day your turtle should be fine as long as you don’t do this again. Turtles can resist without light for some time but if you forget to turn the lamps on repeatedly your turtle will start having health problems.Which bulb you choose will largely depend on your tank, how big it is and how you want to mount it. They also use basking areas after meals to help them digest food. Without this intense heat, they wouldn’t be able to digest the vital nutrients they need. Excess digging may be a sign of your beardie trying to escape an area that is too hot for it. Other reasons for digging include: searching for a hide, egg-laying, and preparing for brumation.
