Thanks to the rather unusual cooperation of the US Navy, it's the only film in pretty much the history of cinema to successfully use footage of real-life aircraft in constructing an action-drama spectacle of tense dogfights and air-to-air combat. This is largely thanks to a brand-new remaster and restoration of the original 35mm camera negatives, which was later mastered to a new 4K digital intermediate. The Blu-ray includes access to a Digital copy of the film as well as “Cleared For Take Off,”“Breaking New Ground – Filming Top Gun: Maverick,”“A Love Letter To Aviation,”“Forging The Darkstar,” and the two music videos. Forging the Darkstar– A look at the aircraft from the movie, what went into it and filming at China Lake. We reviewed the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Maverick on an LG 55B7 Dolby Vision 4K Ultra HD OLED TV with a Panasonic DP-UB820EB-K Dolby Vision HDR10+ 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. That’s not even mentioning the special features on the discs themselves, which include several documentaries involving the making of Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick, commentary tracks with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Top Gun director Tony Scott, music videos, as well as a 45-minute Masterclass video of Tom Cruise at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. Much of the character-driven drama takes priority with precise, clear dialogue that remains that way above the commotion, allowing audiences to enjoy every emotional moment and hear every inflection in each of the performances. Top Gun: Leading a phenomenal cast including Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, Meg Ryan and Tim Robbins, Tom Cruise soars as Maverick, the young, in-your-face U. Cheesy and over the top, Cruise's Top-Gun-with-cars is still an absolute blast of a guilty pleasure, with some of the best race sequences of all time, looking and sounding better than ever in native 4K with Dolby Vision and Atmos.

For whatever else one might be tempted to see in this film for personal or political reasons, Maverick—at its heart—is a love letter to aviation, in particular a kind of aviation that’s fast becoming obsolete, even as the dream of flight remains every bit as potent today as it was when human beings first looked up at the sky. And then we’ve got Penny (Jennifer Connelly), a bar owner who’s an on-again/off-again lover to Maverick (if only we could all be so lucky).Other such scenes taking place indoors even have a natural light echoing effect from the characters talking to each other. With an identical set of bonuses joined by a pair of new featurettes, the overall UHD package is recommended. The object-based mix delivers slightly wider, more expansive imaging with lots of background activity persuasively moving between three front channels and bouncing into the top heights. However, when switching between this 2160p version and its 1080p brethren, overall definition and clarity don't yield the sort of leaps-and-bounds difference we'd expect.
