About this deal

It is the story of flowers and young lovers and dreams, and of the fairies who lived in an enchanted wood near Athens in the days when Theseus came back as a conqueror. In a way we can trace the modern children's story back to the work of Charles and Mary Lamb, who saw a need to make some of the classic Shakespearian plays more accessible to the younger audience.

All of Shakespeare's best-loved plays, comic and tragic, are retold in a clear and robust style, and their literary quality has made them popular and sought-after ever since their first publication in 1807. Illustration by Arthur Rackham for the 1909 edition of Tales from Shakespeare depicting Bottom and Titania from A Midsummer Night's Dream.

This story would appeal strongly to boys, I would imagine (that's not say that girls won't also like it), and unlike Shakespeare's play, this adaptation is easy to understand. The idea was to inculcate in poor women the understanding that their babies from the very moment they were born would respond to any stimuli. Shakespeare appears to be quite interested in crossdressing, I've always kind of speculated about Shakespeare being gay, his writing, his demeanor, visage, tell-tale signs.

Kids edging into 14, 15, and certainly 16 years old should be receiving some exposure to William Shakespeare's own writing, but I think that this book might help them understand the arc of some of Shakespeare's plays better. This collection features retellings of ten Shakespeare plays, each illustrated by a different artist. A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Merchant of Venice and Richard II all date from the mid to late 1590s. The reluctant wooers are Beatrice and Benedick, two of the most delightful people in the history of comedy, and since they are on the stage most of the time they brighten the first courtship along with their own, and transform what might have been a melancholy plot into a complete delight.

Tales from Shakespeare - Penguin Books UK

HarperCollins Children’s Books is thrilled to announce Morpurgo’s Tales from Shakespeare by Michael Morpurgo, a stunning retelling of ten of Shakespeare’s most popular plays.Prince and the Lord along with his betrothed plot to make them fall in love by telling each the other loves them. Duke (has nicer, prettier daughter, gets exiled by brother, lives in forest like Robin Hood), false Duke (kinda evil, of course), daughter falls for father's friends's son who her uncle dislikes, follows father, cousin comes along, daughter dresses up as a boy, befriends beloved who also has come to the forest and has been taken under the wing of the Duke. It is also more of a pageant than a play, and its chief purpose is to describe the events that led up to the birth of King Henry's daughter, the future Queen Elizabeth. Mean the stories as you tell them, so that children can see the truth in them, the fun, and the excitement, identify with the characters, empathise with them.

Mind you, the Lambs haven't included all of the plays in this work – notable absences include the Roman plays (which is a shame because Julius Caesar happens to be one of my favourites) and the History plays. I used to think it was because there was something wrong with me, but reading the plays all together like this, it is easy to see the tragedies are each uniquely unforgettable whereas the comedies are similar, repetitive, and start to to run together in your mind after you have read a few … like so many modern romance movies and books?Based on Michael Morpurgo's beloved book, we have adapted four more retellings of some of Shakespeare's best-loved plays: Hamlet,Henry V,King Learand The Taming of the Shrew.
