Playing Bardsung only one crawl at a time with breaks in between simply won’t allow the design and the flow of the game to sink its hooks into you. Bardsung is a campaign based boardgame by Steamforged Games that attempts to straddle the line between board game and D20-based RPG’s. Unlike the ambitious Executioners, they are fiercely loyal to their liege and each other, fighting as a disciplined phalanx that you’ll struggle to break.
Dangerous at range but vulnerable up close, these foes will puncture your heroes with arrows as their Hobgoblin allies keep them free from hand-to-hand combat. You have the freedom to either follow your hero’s designated path, or to create your own bespoke hero with a unique set of traits and arsenal of attack combos. Neoprene promotes smoother dice rolls, doesn’t crease or fold, and will protect your carefully-painted minis against any accidental drops. Each hero in Bardsung has a plethora of skills to choose from, all of which can be further upgraded to be more powerful, useful or versatile.
Well then, we should indeed count our blessings, for greater dangers lurk withinthe darkness than most might ever suspect. From your physical passage through the dungeon to your hero’s metaphorical journey, Bardsung is a game of paths where your choices define your experience.
He now enjoys playing worker placement, deck building, dice driven and coop games with his primary gaming partner, his wife. Bardsung doesn’t necessarily need to be simpler, but it needs to better balance complexity with playability. The campaign is sprawling, with choices leading to different Chapters (quests), so all 31 Chapters will not be experienced in a single playthrough. Further altering each play is are the narrative twists and turns offered via the cards that are seeded throughout the Chapters, so even a run through of the same path through the game will have different story beats and discoveries.This is not a negative though, as similar dungeon games we've played have just as many bits and gubbins too. Where other Hobgoblins close the distance to make their attacks, Raiders are chosen for their unerring aim and quick reactions. Games skewing more towards TTRPG than boardgames allow for complexity in story and world, but the actual mechanics are usually more or less the same for everything: roll dice/draw cards, add or subtract numbers, and then something happens based on a table of some kind.

That extra bit of engagement means that everyone is alert and ready when it’s time for their hero to act, cutting out the ever- present threat of someone growing bored and reaching for their phone once they’ve taken their turn for the round.The TN is utilized for both when your character attacks the monster (to hit a monster, you have to roll higher than the TN) or when the monster attacks you (if you roll higher than their TN, you avoid the attack). Considering that each dungeon will be about 40 minutes at least, this is hours of play exploring randomly dealt tiles and fighting against the same group of monsters until something new happens. Cold and unforgiving, Duergar Arcanists hold only their own lives dear, and think little of lashing others to death with dangerous and unstable magick.
