About this deal

The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged. The book also very cleverly highlights many 'pitfalls' of writing which (most) people tend to make in their writing without realising. Clarity, consistency and structure -- Reading between the lines: recognising underlying assumptions and implicit arguments -- Does it add up?

In addition, you'll have access to Kortext's smart study tools including highlighting, notetaking, copy and paste, and easy reference export. Critical thinking includes the component skills of analyzing arguments, making inferences using inductive or deductive reasoning, judging or evaluating, and making decisions or solving problems. This assignment will also assess the application of critical thinking to different situations as well as assessment instruments that can be used to measure critical thinking. This book helped me immensely with my critical thinking skills, so much so I can see the benefits in other parts of my education. I found that a lot of it was really just common sense, but the book spells out what common sense actually is in the context of responding to written arguments, which is helpful and made me realise quite how much is involved in a process that I previously took for granted. The book effectively clarifies what critical thinking is and how it is used in academic reading, writing and note-taking. In fact, it is very essential to teach learners at undergraduate level CTS along with other language skills such as Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Its great that the chapters give you the possibility of doing a few exercises to practice the skills, however there is very little novelty in the book.

There are 'test yourself' at the end of each section/chapter which are great for you to get an overall sense of how well you understood each particular topic. Other than reminding me what critical skills are and how to put them into practice I do not believe the book added anything to my skill set. I bought this book in preparation for uni and it has been very helpful in 'reading between the lines' and clarifying strong and weak arguments. Written by Stella Cottrell, leader in the field with over one million book sales to date, this text breaks down a complex subject into easily understood blocks, providing easy-to-follow, step-by-step explanations and practice activities to develop understanding and practise your skills at each stage.

In practice, Critical Thinking is a skill that undergraduate learners are supposed to master as they complete their studies.

The book is an instructive source for those who want to ameliorate their writing skills ( for eg, writing an essay) in analytical ways. The main thing this helped with was my BMAT section 1 where I instantly saw my marks skyrocket once armed with the knowledge from this book. Critical Thinking Skills provides an easy to follow, step by step guide to developing analytical reasoning skills and applying them to tasks such as reading, note-making and writing. Stella Cottrell's student-centred approach demystifies critical thinking and breaks down a complex subject into manageable chunks.Proceeding beyond this level of feedback is difficult when many students don't understand what analysis is or how to integrate criticism into their work. Personally, the only valuable information I got from the book was a review of what critical thinking is and a step by step guide to be able to put them into practice better.

Only thing that I disagree with the author is that early on the book, the author insist on being non-emotional while accessing an argument. Essential for students who are mystified by tutor comments such as 'more critical analysis needed', this is an invaluable tool for anyone wishing to develop advanced skills in this area and learn to apply them to tasks such as reading, writing and note-taking. Her other titles include The Study Skills Handbook, Critical Thinking Skills, Skills for Success, The Macmillan Student Planner, The Exam Skills Handbook and Mindfulness for Students.Used books have different signs of use and might not include supplemental materials such as CDs, Dvds, Access Codes, charts or any other extra material. Critical thinking no doubt has become an integral part of education, the world of work, and even our regular life. She is the million copy best-selling author of The Study Skills Handbook , The Palgrave Student Planner , The Exam Skills Handbook , Study Skills Connected , You2Uni and Skills for Success , a key text on personal development planning.
