Chladni plates are designed to demonstrate how sound vibrations travel at different frequencies. The plate itself is covered with a fine, powdery substance, and connected to a function generator and vibration generator. When used together, these generators create oscillating sound waves at varying frequencies. Chladni’s interest in music and acoustics led him to consider an instrument’s shape and symmetry, fostering the idea for which he is best known… Finding the Art in Acoustics with Chladni Plates While many methods of visualizing sound have replaced Chladni’s technique, scientists still see its potential for studying physics phenomena. For instance, physicists tend to agree that the particle motion of nodal lines is random and therefore can’t be controlled — but researchers have shown that the motion of multiple objects could be controlled on a Chladni plate. One research team used a laser light instead of a violin bow to excite a thin, rigid membrane, and observed a similar effect with small vibrating objects. They then visualized the patterns through an array of quantum dots. This discovery could lead to a device that can detect small gravitational anomalies when designing shielding for nuclear materials.

Having graduated with a major in Computer Science and minors in Physics and Mathematics, I began my teaching career at Killarney Collegiate Institute in Killarney, Manitoba in 2009. While teaching Physics there, I decided to invest in PASCO products and approached the Killarney Foundation with a proposal about funding the Physics lab with the SPARK Science Learning System and sensors. While there I also started a tremendously successful new course that gave students the ability to explore their interests in science and consisted of students completing one project a month, two of which were to be hands-on experiments, two of which were to be research based, and the final being up to the student. Chladni also paved the way for experimental acoustics. It was perhaps the physicist’s interest and ability in music that inspired him to pursue the field, inventing new instruments based on inventions of Benjamin Franklin and Robert Hooke, including the euphone and the clavicylinder. When either of the plates are used with the included generators, and fine and dry powdery substance (e.g., sand) can be sprinkled on top of the metal surface to generate acoustically excited figures in the dry particles. In the early nineteenth century, Ernst Chladni added another dimension to wave experiments by sprinkling sand on a thin plate and using a violin bow to induce vibrations. The sand that collected along the nodal lines of the wave patterns painted clear and beautiful pictures of the various modes of vibration. Visualizing sound has applications in many areas, such as furniture placement in a room and analyses of fluid-filled pipes. By studying sound’s variations, wave forms, wavelengths, speed, and other properties, we can better understand how to manipulate and reproduce sound, as well as account for its physical effects in designs. Mine is an 18" square. I had to cut it down to this size. The only sizes I could find at the hardware stores were 12" which would have been too small, or 24" which would have just been too heavy. Make sure the gauge steel is sturdy enough to stay straight when horizontal - you don't want it to sag or all the salt will simply fall off your plate. I don't need to destroy my nice speaker since I can cut sugru and re-use my speaker once the experiment is done

This build began as a science project with my son. He wanted to do a project about sound - after some research we found this mesmerizing video that introduced us to Chladni plates. We were fascinated & knew we had to build one! Unfortunately that video give no real information about the device they use. We now know that sound propagates in waves through a solid, gas, or liquid medium — but we didn’t always know this. In the late 1700s, a German scientist named Ernst Chladni was the first to show that sound travels via waves by devising a way to visualize their vibrations. The transducer has been salvaged from a large hard-disk drive. It consists of a heavy electromagnet and current coil -- not unlike the magnet/voice-coil arrangement in a loudspeaker.
