ITV Press Centre. 18 June 2015 . Retrieved 1 April 2016. Gerald Durrell is an author of fiction. His full name is Gerald Malcolm Durrell. Born January 7, 1925, in India, his family settled in Corfu when he was young and this gave Gerald some opportunity to study the wildlife there. He put these experiences into a trilogy that started off with My Family and Other Animals. He would follow it with two more, the last of which being titled The Garden of the Gods. He includes a lot of humor as well as details about animals and humans that he meets in them.

Louis Theroux reveals he's considering a major step to 'continue his career' after losing his eyebrows to a health condition So the Durrell family does what seems only natural to them and sell their house. Once free of their home in England, they are free to relocate completely to Corfu, an exotic and sunny Greek island. It may be unconventional, but it makes perfect sense to them. Durrell was born in Jamshedpur, British India, on 7 January 1925. [1] He was the fifth and youngest child (an elder sister having died in infancy) of Louisa Florence Dixie and Lawrence Samuel Durrell, both of whom were born in India of English and Irish descent. Durrell's father was a British engineer and, as was commonplace for a family of their status, the infant Durrell spent most of his time in the company of an ayah (nursemaid). Durrell reportedly recalled his first visit to a zoo in India and attributed his lifelong love of animals to that encounter.

In 1978, Durrell started the training centre for conservationists at the zoo, or the "mini-university" in his words. As of 2005, over a thousand biologists, naturalists, zoo veterinarians and zoo architects from 104 countries have attended the International Training Centre. Durrell was also instrumental in forming the Captive Breeding Specialist Group of the World Conservation Union in 1982.

The Durrells of Corfu describes the family’s upbringing in India and the crisis that brought them to England and then Greece. It recalls the genuine characters they encountered on Corfu – Theodore the biologist, the taxi driver Spiro Halikiopoulos and the prisoner Kosti – as well as the visit of American writer Henry Miller. And Haag has unearthed the story of how the Durrells left Corfu, including Margo’s and Larry’s last-minute escapes before the War. An extended epilogue looks at the emergence of Larry as a world famous novelist, and Gerry as a naturalist and champion of endangered species, as well as the lives of the rest of the family, their friends and other animals. The recent TV award winning adaption The Durrells left its 7 million fans with questions: What happened to the family – and what took them to Corfu in the first place? This book has the answers.

The success of the film To Bafut with Beagles, together with his autobiographical radio programme Encounters with Animals, made Durrell a regular with the BBC Natural History unit [9] [10] for decades to come, as well as generating funds for his conservation projects. Despite the TV adaptation’s fittingly poignant conclusion, I was still suffering a severe case of Durrells withdrawal when Michael Haag’s The Durrells of Corfu popped up in my library recommendations list. Yes please… just what I needed. Finally there is Lawrence Durrell’s lengthy correspondence with Henry Miller from the late 1930s on which all Durrell biographers are obliged to draw. These letters nail once and for all the old canard that the four siblings plus “Mother” lived together in hilarious uproar among those crumbling Venetian piles. Far from being the irascible bachelor “Larry” of My Family, Lawrence was actually the irascible husband of Nancy Myers with whom he lived mostly on the other side of the island. Indeed, for significant stretches of time the uncomfortable young couple were not on Corfu at all, but busy hobnobbing with Miller in Paris and TS Eliot in London, in service of Lawrence’s already promising literary career.
