One of my television songs, A SQUASH AND A SQUEEZE, was made into a book in 1993, with illustrations by the wonderful Axel Scheffler. It was great to hold the book in my hand without it vanishing in the air the way the songs did. This prompted me to unearth some plays I’d written for a school reading group, and since then I’ve had 20 plays published. Most children love acting and it’s a tremendous way to improve their reading. Goat Goes To Playgroup is a story that preschoolers will find very easy to identify with. Follow Goat through the adventures of a typical day at kindergarten. This story connects well to a number of different topics. You could explore daily routines, sports and leisure or school. This book really turned me off. If you want your child to "fit in", and "do as he's told" regardless of his well being, this book is for you. My real breakthrough was THE GRUFFALO, again illustrated by Axel. We work separately - he’s in London and I’m in Glasgow - but he sends me letters with lovely funny pictures on the envelopes.If you can appreciate the joys and uniqueness each child has on their own, and that trying to fit them into little holes where they can conform to society is detrimental to them, I'd think you'd want to stay away from this book. My son who's 3 in September loves this book especially since he's going to playschool soon and is so excited he loves anything to do with it. I like reading it to him as I feel it's giving him an idea of the playschool day.

very good book. my 3 years son loves it and he had learnt it, so when I read it, he completes the sentences. Thumping head? Tummy ache? Nose all sore and sniffy? Then call for Doctorsaurus and she’ll fix you in a jiffy! There is so much to talk about when you share the story. Some children will enjoy pointing to and naming the animals…‘dog’‘goat’. Some children will like to tell you what the animals are doing…‘Weasel is painting’. Some children will be able to share what they like to do at Nursery.Another great Julia Donaldson book. The illustrations are beautiful and the book gives us a lot to talk about.

I really enjoy writing verse, even though it can be fiendishly difficult. I used to memorise poems as a child and it means a lot to me when parents tell me their child can recite one of my books.
