About this deal

What will become of her independence if she chooses to stay with this man who is establishing a life for himself? In the sticky Mediterranean heat, among tropical plants and secluded beaches, she must decide what form her adult life should take and learn how to feel deserving of love and care. This is reflected in the language, each sentence feeling like a bevy of sensation without a single word wasted. Andrews deftly covers the toxic diet and body culture of the early 2000s with our young protagonist, who, for most of her life, has been subjected to this culture from magazines, television shows, friends and family in her life etc.

written from a first-person perspective, andrews' use of the direct address, "you," symbolises a new leap in her work, as not only are we looking inward on the protagonist and her internal monologue, but we are also observing the people around her as the relationship progresses. Like Saltwater (also by Andrews, also loved), Milk Teeth has a dreamlike and meandering character-based plot. And her - much like she does her friends and the man she is enraptured by - pushing us a safe distance away. In Saltwater Andrews sought a voice that is her own, something she has truly settled into in Milk Teeth.

She tells us that she ‘didn’t know what to do with all that want as it swelled in me like a river’, and the novel very much reads like a rumination on this dilemma.Unfortunately, rather than casting off her irritating writing style, she appears to have really doubled down on it. Nor as the woman who relates to that sense of never being whole, never being enough, while wanting nothing more than to let someone else fill me up and decide where life goes next. irritating pages of fretting over “wanting too much while afraid of not wanting”;afraid of not asking for what you want; afraid of verbalizing , then internally verbalizing everything ….
