About this deal

Despite being a vinyl lover and having resisted the lure of such small digital players, I have to say that the CDJ-400 is a whole lot of fun. The only thing I would say is that the Pitch Control doesn't have a guide on the side, which means making precise beat-matches can be difficult if you use visionary skills.

Of course it has nothing to do with CDJ 1000 and even less with a 2000, but it is a very boenne platinum. Pioneer made two variants of the CDJ 400, both of which had black finishes along with distinctive blue LED lighting. However, my personal view on these effects is to use them extremely sparingly in a live situation; otherwise they can quickly become tiresome and irritating. Is in good condition and does have some minor scratches to the side of the device however they do not affect the use of the device. Of course having tested the cdj 900 850 or 2000, that the board is larger, the accuracy is even better.

And as we’ve come to expect from Pioneer, sound quality from the CDJ-400 is excellent with kicking tracks like Armand Van Helden’s ”U Don’t Know Me” sounding dynamic and punchy without any harshness at the top end. FAT devices appear to work perfectly so you Mac guys out there could format external drives as FAT for the time being.

I tested the CDJ-400 with a couple of different USB keys, an iPod video, several MP3 CD-ROM disks and some standard audio CDs, and it performed without a hitch.

The more I played with the platter, loops, effects and master tempo, the more I wanted one for myself. If however the slightly dodgy BPM detection works properly, you can simply hit the Beat Loop + button and the CDJ-400 will auto slice you a loop perfectly on beat. So if you're like me, and will use these decks for recreation and general messing around then the Pioneer CDJ-400 is the winner. You can plug in a hub (although not recommended by Pioneer) but will only ever be able to use a single device at a time in it. I was worried because it was raining when it got dropped off to my house, however the seller packaged it extremely well and it was safe and secured.
