About this deal

I'm confused as to what exactly this book is supposed to be, considering it feels like random ramblings about stuff Chung likes and collages of pictures she (I guess? Heartbreak will force you to strike up conversation with anyone who will listen and who might be able to tell you it’s going to be okay. And, despite her (self-confessed) habit of dating boys in bands, she’s clearly a girl’s girl who, I imagine, would be enormous fun on a night out. Chung has admitted before that she has been packing her point-and-shoot camera inside her handbag “before they became cool and trendy”. Alexa Chung's new book »IT« delivers exactly what you’d expect from a rose-colored, high-quality linen cover: A wealth of inspiration, beauty advice, and personal snapshots.

She said so herself that this book was more of a side project in which she would babble about nothing in particular - a journal of sorts. I only took this out of the library because I've heard several times that it's absolutely terrible, and I was curious.Oh, how I miss being 13 and reading and studying this book as if it was the Bible hoping that someday I'll be an it girl like the late 2000s/early 2010s Alexa Chung, and then crying reading the only 2 pages she wrote about her breakup with Alex Turner thinking it was the deepest shit I'd ever read. Filled with doodles, personal photos, lists, and discussions of her sources of inspiration, Chung lightly sketches a portrait of her universe in an engaging voice. Despite Chung´s name was well-known amongst designers, Chung elevated her persona when her iconic curation of obsessions disguised as a memoir conceived IT, becoming an overnight sensation amongst Tumblr users and fashion gurus. Back then, the lack of interest from the media and fashion industries to explore gender fluidity and conventions was not yet on IT´s agenda.

What I love is her honest, frank views that make me laugh, we all know we have been there – “Scrolling through photos [on Instagram] of girls your ex may or may not be shagging won’t help you. Tell us why you liked or disliked the book; using examples and comparisons is a great way to do this. While the driving force of our time derives from ever-evolving conversations concerning gender expression, diversity and representation, Chung still embodies a voice that looks at gender from a traditional scope, one that cannot let go of the gender conceptions that have been fueled for decades. If this wasn't written by one of the most famous models of all time it would most likely have terrible reviews. though it just at a glance looked ridiculously awful and I don't even know who Alexa Chung is (she's a model, I find out, but…) and fashion is something I don't care about.Last year Alexa Chung added author to one of those multi-hyphenate careers that also includes model, presenter, designer and DJ, with the launch of It a kind of style-scrapbook-meets-journal filled with drawings, photographs and musings on life, love and how to decide what to wear in the morning.

Some of the main motifs in IT consist of photo booth picture strips with no context at all, point-and-shoot images (nowadays extremely popular and loved online), doodles occupying one to two pages, lists, her oyster card scan, and oversaturated photos of writings in the sand that read “fuck you” and “the end” towards, you guessed it, the end of the book. Part of the sensorial experience that comes with holding a copy of IT is its visual and literary motifs. The aesthetic quality of the book is obviously important and would be to a fashionista like Miss Chung. I love photographs, and I also recently discovered my love for memoirs (thanks to I'm Supposed to Protect You from All This by Nadja Spiegelman), so this book came at the perfect time for me to read and enjoy. Chung remains loyal to traditional gender conventions that paint women with a pink brush, and men with an electric blue sharpie.Already a hugely popular television personality and a muse for Marc Jacobs and Karl Lagerfeld, Chung is now a co-anchor of the nightly music show Fuse News , covering today’s hottest acts and entertainment news. One thing about her that is so refreshing is that she never hesitates to downplay her accomplishments and fame. IT is a journey; from her style genesis to defining what timeless means for her, to inspiring her readers to reflect on what it means for us too. But again it doesn’t seem that deep, more than anything she’s just being “I’m not like other girls”.
