They were good for the first 8 weeks, but I felt I wasn't being taught in the way I needed to learn. However, there tends to be a difficult hitch at the end of the “G position” chapter with the pieces “Beautiful Brown Eyes” and “Alpine Melody”. A quick correction: I mentioned that you could transition from the 2nd adult book to the 3rd regular book in the basic series, but having reviewed this I don’t recommend it.
The downside of a chord-based approach is that your left hand won’t be as equipped to deal with Classical music if you’re headed that route. There is a smooth, logical progression between each lesson, a thorough explanation of chord theory and playing styles, and outstanding extra songs, including folk, classical, and contemporary selections.One thing you’ll immediately notice when you crack the cover is a list of books that can be used alongside this one. As with many chord-based approaches, I find the note-reading in this book to be relatively easy (if you’re able to pinpoint chord patterns), but the rhythms to be more challenging. The review section in the first book is also pretty nice it has Over the Rainbow, At Last, Amazing Grace, and several other well known songs that wrap up what you learn.

The first level (this book) covers several basic keys (scales, most frequently used chords), 1/8 notes, pedals, staccato. You can fine each of the Alfred’s Adult Piano Courses here: Make sure to start with Book 1 if you are a beginner though!I loved the popular tunes because they're easy to pick up and remember, but if you're only looking for classical music you may be better off with Fundamental Keys. If you are using other repertoire or teaching material for beginners, this book won't be compatible with most of them as a lot of methods teach starting with both thumbs on middle C and the fingers moving outwards from there. As with the first book, the level two book comes with corresponding books if you’d like to stay within the Alfred family but not be limited to the selections of the method book. But once you get through that stormy patch, the going is pretty good again right up to “Go Down, Moses” on page 85.I think the best adult method book is Hal Leonard, but an in between of that and Alfred would be the Piano Adventures Adult all-in-one. Since all these books are interconnected, it even tells you at what page you’re ready to start a supplemental book. It’s the book I used exclusively when I first started teaching piano, so I have a soft spot in my heart for it.
