As for the content of the book, let’s just say there are many good reasons why Andrea Stewart earned a six-figure deal for this trilogy. Lin learns that her father created Bayan (he’s been growing people…), and he plans to put his consciousness into him. If you can handle the slower pacing, I would definitely recommend this, for well-written complex character arcs, a plot that unravels deliciously, and of course, a magical animal companion that will steal your heart instantly. It was unputdownable: I ached to know more about each intriguing whisper of a plot twist, and it simultaneously felt like a well-loved quilt being patched together and also a ball of yarn slowly unfurling to create a beautiful shape.I won’t deny that I really felt it and the way the plot inched along, particularly in the beginning. What’s funny was that the class-difference (rich-poor) between the couples was frowned upon but the fact that they were engaged in same-sex relationship was totally acceptable.

The Bone Shard Daughter is epic fantasy at its most human and heartfelt, concerned with the real lives caught in the gears of empire and rebellion. It is original and well written, there is action, intrigue, and even a little bit of romance, and I strongly recommend it if you are looking for something a little different from the usual YA. I loved learning more about the constructs—built from parts of dead animals—and the bone shard magic involved to reanimate them; I found the act of imbuing commands into these constructs and the repercussion of failing to be fascinating.Originality has been such a need in the fantasy genre lately, and this book is every bit an original. The second thread is tied to Jovis whose missing wife’s face is suspended in his memory like an axis point around which all else turns.

It also allows the reader to deduce things that the individual characters may be unaware of, contributing to a nice tension as the reader awaits the character's awakening to what the reader knows.

Cloud juniper trees also seem to have a different kind of magic, which I suspect will be explored in the sequels. Lin is the Emperor’s daughter, but a mysterious illness has stolen her childhood memories and her status as heir to the empire.
