About this deal

The challenge with this concept is the games need to be vigorously tested and so full of thick content that it could sign a three-season deal with The Learning Channel. The only moments that made us pause were the government and district events, which took as much time as the barbarian movement once we were accustomed to it. Cities fully surrounded by control tokens become “mature” and start to produce trade goods on a regular basis.

Progress does not have to be linear; a level II, or even a level I card, can be replaced by a level IV card directly. There are other areas that could be expanded as well, but with the amount of play desired from the game, on the whole, the content available is not generous. More powerful technology cards not only bump up your tech dial, but provide you with some additional resources.

Each turn (once all players have taken an action), the Event Dial marker will move along, which indicates whether something else happens: Barbarians move (random direction), they respawn at their respective dens, or players can collect additional trade tokens for any mature cities they have.

Civilization: New Dawn has some inspired mechanics and offers a fresh and euro-like feel to the civ building genre. These constructs will provide not only bonuses during the game, but will be essential to completing objectives to win too. You really keep to yourself when playing this one until you end up either sending a caravan to another player’s city to gain a benefit which from what I’ve seen, are not all that great. Add in the fact that you can now play with up to five players, and Terra Incognita becomes an indispensable addition for every fan of Civilization: A New Dawn.

These would-be conquerors construct and populate the map with barbarians, natural resources, and city-states, then formulate their plans for how they will shape this world to their vision. Additionally, and as much as I have played Avalon Hill's Civilization and Advanced Civilization boardgames which prompted Sid Meier to create his digital masterpiece, I have not played any of the boardgames that came as a result of the PC game, namely 2002's Sid Meier's Civilization: The Boardgame and 2010's Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game. Industry is where all your building needs are met, with the choice of building a new city or a world wonder if you have the necessary resources to do so.

Now I am both happy wargames player and content creator who enjoys replying – and possibly changing – the history. The only two on top of my head would be Lords of Waterdeep‘s Scoundrels of Skullport and Viticulture’s Tuscany. They move a specific number of spaces, and the terrain type they can cross is dependent on the slot number.

Sure, ‘Hansa’ will never be a beauty competition winner… it’s hard to convince people to play at first, but after that, almost everyone is delighted 🙂 Works great with 4-5 players. Each player’s tech dial is put to zero and a capital city is placed on a free star space nearest to each player to act as base camp. Each tile has two different sides which vary each game as the tiles all have different resources and barbarian starting locations. After playing it a few times, I can say with confidence that this expansion turned an interesting concept into a fully realized experience.
