It will be the carbon you had already lost, when the steel rusted and iron became iron oxide the carbon was still in the mix but not doing anything useful. Get 5 litres [or more] set up bath, immerse components and relax with a coffee, works quickly [but I tend to leave over night]. I'm not too worried about it as it's easy to remove, but out of pure curiosity, does anyone else think this is carbon migration and could it be of a level that would actually be noticeable on the steel? If you are used to acid type rust removers, switch now, this stuff is so user friendly, kind to skin etc but harsh on rust.I've been using evaporust quite a while and will be trying the molasses treatment when I run out of my current 5 gal pail. I know that decarburisation can have a bad effect on tool steel during the heat treatment process, but evapo rust claim it won't have any effect in this instance. I suppose the difference is that may eat the parts if left long enough whereas this Evaporust claims to be pH neutral.
