I had heard about using heat lamps for chickens that don't produce light, but I'm hesitant with that option?They also enjoy being there and exploring outside when it’s not too cold and inside the garage when it’s chillier. So I rigged up an electric space heater set on tile on low, just on the outside of their secure play pen fencing. While none of us can predict the weather, there are a few simple steps we can take to make sure our rabbits are safe, warm, happy and healthy as the colder weather descends. Even with a heating device, the water must be checked several times throughout the day and replaced if necessary.
If they don't want it there's room for them not to use but everynight, so far, they've been piled all on top or around it.I think the best solution would be to get a heating pad (or two) so they have somewhere warm to snuggle if needed.
These will insert and exit more easily and are generally more safe and gentle during temperature readings. Though by no means an absolute determinant of temperature, feeling your rabbit's ears can be a quick and easy way to gauge your rabbit's general temperature.
Long term, I can build a box to separate them from the pad and cord, but until then I’ll have to find another solution.
This convenience is paramount to me since i occasionally work away during the week for a night or 2. It is possible that the thermometer hit a dropping in the anus, in which case the temperature would not register properly. You should also ensure that new pets are used to the outdoor enclosure in time for winter (from spring onwards).The enclosure and hutch should include several elevated levels to enable your rabbits to retreat to different levels if the ground is very cold; in particular, the sleeping compartment must not be too close to the ground, as it may be at risk of ground frost. A portion of extra food during winter is recommended as it helps rabbits to build additional fat reserves against the cold. So - looking for some feedback from people who have used any of these methods to keep the hutch relatively warm in the colder months.
