About this deal

This is the hour of reckoning, or at least this is what they shout as they flock toward the retention pond behind Kiera’s house, kicking up grass and startling the neighborhood dogs into song.

A thirteen-year-old meditates on her sadness and the difference between herself and her white best friend when an unexpected tragedy occurs; a woman recovering from a miscarriage finds herself unable to let go of her daughter—whose body parts she sees throughout her daily life; a teenager resists her family’s church and is accused of courting the devil; servers at a supper club cater to the insatiable cravings of their wealthy clientele; and two estranged siblings take a road-trip with their father’s ashes and are forced to face the troubling reality of how he continues to shape them. She plays at being hanged from a limb of the white-spotted sycamore beside her house, holding tight to the branches, her body limp and swinging, until she tires and drops. Like Danielle Evans and Lauren Groff, Moniz is unafraid to expose the darkened corners of the Sunshine State, and of female desire. Milk Blood Heat is a slim but mighty volume of short fiction, one that announces Moniz as a transfixing voice capable of limning often staggering emotional truths. And I really liked the way Matthews described schizophrenia as possibly being more about those afflicted with it experiencing things the rest of us cannot, rather than experiencing things that simply are not there. They had hoped that changing a person's blood could have different beneficial effects such as curing diseases or even changing a personality. Her mother is gone from her life, and there are rumors that she was killed by her father and buried near the abandoned house across the street. Each story vibrates with a thrumming undercurrent of primal power, found in both nature and in the most shadowy parts of ourselves… Dark and lushly layered, these stories will bewitch you.

There’s something about this book that excites me, about the possibility of form and collections that take on different modes while still feeling cohesive. Difficulties in families are natural, so is forgiveness, but some family members are simply — constitutionally — bad.

Trying to name it was like pulling words up from her belly, bucketful after heavy bucketful, all that effort but they never meant what she wanted them to. Through the stories of ordinary characters confronted by extraordinary moments of violent yet often beautiful reckoning, Dantiel W. Prior to the discovery of blood types by Karl Landsteiner in 1901 and effective methods of avoiding coagulation when transfusing blood, human beings who had lost significant amounts of blood were pretty screwed, and not just because of the loss of blood, but also because of what we used to replace it with. It did feel like there were big chunks of his story left out and this meant that I really struggled to identify with him.

Overall I say four out of five stars and I'm pretty sure I will be looking at some other works by this author. The author tells a captivating story, switching between characters and 3rd and 1st person and it works out so well. The first successful transfusion of blood was performed in the 17th century by a physician named Richard Lower. In unvarnished, visceral prose, Moniz uses the ‘swampy stench’ of Florida as a backdrop to explore the internal and external perfidies of womanhood. This is my small pat on the back for the courageous bravery shown by Adrian and his mother Jan, and the incredible lives they have led all told with charm, wit and brutal honesty.

I started reading it at work, almost asked my patients to come back later and really just wanted to send my family out for take-out food so I could finish it without interruption last night! If the concentration, pH, and temperature were adjusted, this material could be designed to match the viscosity of whole blood, allowing physicians to use less plasma. The whole thrill of it was only to stand face-to-face with Kiera and feel, for a moment, that they were the same. Characters wade through family obligations, and personal contradictions in this collection of short stories set in sunshine state.Hij houdt zichzelf recht door grote wilde plannen en ambities te koesteren waar weinig van in huis komt. Getting into our heads a little bit, reminding us of him, that he is there also, with us, leading us through the story.
