About this deal

Once arriving there, they find it a desolate and lonely place, inhabited only by a very unfriendly fisherman.

There was maybe one mention of the friends back home, but otherwise it was like these friends had been forgotten! The family decides to set off on their boat and live on the tiny dot of an island with a lighthouse on it that Moominpappa has "claimed". Eventually she starts painting the walls of the lighthouse with flowers until she's drawn all of Moominvalley. The struggle of growing up, fighting loneliness, desire to understand oneself, the feeling of uprootedness, personal failure, it's all in there cleverly disguised as a children's story. Moominpappa at Sea (Swedish: Pappan och havet Literally: "The Father and the Sea") is the tenth in the series of Tove Jansson's Moomin books and the eight novel, published in 1965.

Moominpappa is dissatisfied with his life in Moomin Valley, so he organises the family to set off on a journey to find a lighthouse in the sea. De todas maneras, sabes que es una joya de la literatura, que los dibujos de Tove son exquisitos y que reirás, pero que también llorarás con los Moomin. But how is Moominmamma to grow her flowers and what strange fate befell the last keeper of the lighthouse? There have been in picture books and in the graphic novel occasional works of genius where the producer of the text and the producer of the art being the same person fuse the art and the text into a seamless work of genius. Tove Jansson wrote and illustrated her first Moomin book, The Moomins and the Great Flood (1945), during World War II.

The book is notable for its introspective and contemplative tone, which is in contrast to the other books found within the Moomin series. This was an enjoyable piece of escapism, anyone who has longed to get away from everyday life and challenge themselves to live on an island will enjoy this story of starting again from scratch. Men jag saknar ändå äventyrligheten och det fridfulla som får ta större plats i de andra Mumin-böckerna. Moominsummer Madness is the transitional work and Moominpappa At Sea is the best of the later works. Still some strange moments of magic and wonder, of course, but tempered by cynicism and a warm-but-realistic sense of the petty and no-so-petty impulses that drive people. With the obvious presumption that there is a lighthouse out in the middle of the sea, that happens to be unoccupied. In fact, Moominpappa's crisis stems from the fact he has nothing to keep him occupied, a familiar problem these days, though in his case it is not due to being retired or unemployed. And then the whole series got rereleased this year for the 100th anniversary of Tove Jansson's birth. Finding a dot on the map which may or may not be a bit of fly poo, they set of to inhabit a new island. Rather, I found it a totally profound book about a crisis in masculinty, midlife crisis and the dangers of isolation.
