Magee (Chronicle) (2003), If I Built a Car (Puffin) (2005) and I’ve had a ball illustrating Kate DiCamillo’s Mercy Watson series (Candlewick). Magee and his loyal sidekick Dee are probably my twins' most loved pair of characters from all of the books we read. I sat on the floor with the student as I read this story and they were constantly commenting on the pictures. Since the book is read aloud, it is good for beginning readers who are just engaging with books for enjoyment.
What makes the Magee books even more magnificent is that fact that the text on all 36 pages is written in sweet, humorous and intelligent rhyme. Magee and Dee leave home bright and early to learn how to ski - but a run-in with a moose finds them flying through the air and suspended a hundred feet above an abyss!

Chris Van Dusen is definitely near the very top of my list of favorite illustrators ever and in this book he's at his best. Magee books are certainly not easy to create, Van Dusen published the three existing ones between 2000 and 2010.Magee and his little dog Dee have yet another silly and unexpected adventure in this new addition to the popular series. As stated above, we used this book to learn some vocabulary words that some of the students didn't know. I am biased because pictures are what makes or breaks a book for me so I love this book and all of the other ones by this author/illustrator. Chris Van Dusen books are always a delight, combining playful rhyming text with bright, comical artwork that's alive with color and detail. The child may not be able to read at this reading level yet, but he or she can still appreciate the the book and build comprehension.

Although Van Dusen also illustrated the hyper-popular Mercy Watson series penned by Kate DiCamillo about a porcine wonder, the Magee stories are clearly superior as fables. It was fun to read this book to students and be able to show them with pictures what these words meant.The illustrations in this book are amazing and if you are wondering where you have seen art like this before, maybe you are remembering the Mercy Watson (pig) books as this author also illustrated those books! He was appointed Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Oxford University Hospitals in 2012 where he is a Senior Surgeon in the Thames Valley Vascular Network.
