Some character prophecies made in the first book aren’t even mentioned again till the last when they are finally fulfilled. He was as noble and fair in face as an elf-lord, as strong as a warrior, as wise as a wizard, as venerable as a king of dwarves, and as kind as summer. This stereotype is a more or less accurate reflection of a number of fantasy series, but one which it fits better than most is Robert Jordan’s “Wheel of Time” series.
I went into this book with absolutely no knowledge of what I was getting into, but given how much I have enjoyed the rest of the books in this series I had some high optimism for this being a fun read. His house was perfect whether you liked food, or sleep, or work, or story-telling, or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all. Jordan was enrolled in a study using the drug Revlimid just approved for multiple myeloma but not yet tested on primary amyloidosis.
Some fantasy authors manage to create amazing atmospheres without the encyclopedia details -- China Mieville's "Bas Lag" books and Gene Wolfe's "Solar Cycle" come to mind. And Moiraine Damodred, a young Accepted soon to be raised to Aes Sedai, and Lan Mandragoran, a young soldier fighting in the battle, are set on paths that will bind their lives together.Talking about the world, this book actually adds a lot of really nice lore and contextualises a fair number of things in the main series which was great and we really get to learn a fair bit about character back stories and also just being there for these events that we largely know about, but not to this level of detail. A lesser example of the same effect is with Jordan’s ideas about the nature of the One Power that the Aes Sedai wield through ‘channelling’, which is said to have elemental associations and the equivalent of magic spells are cast by ‘weaving threads’ in the world. I tried listening with headphones, but that just makes the bad audio quality stand out even more and is very grating on the ears.
Responding to queries on the similarity of some of the concepts in his Wheel of Time books with Freemasonry concepts, Jordan admitted that he was a Freemason. Now, while I was waiting patiently for Knife of Dreams to come out (Book 11), New Spring was released and confused m, as I thought at first it was book 11, and wondered why book 11 would be a Prequel!I decided to get it after book 7, since audible doesn't have book 8 at the time I'm writing this review.
The novel ends in the city of Chachin, where Moiraine takes on the former Mistress of Novices, Merean Redhill, who is discovered to be Black Ajah. I feel the main highlight in New Spring is Robert Jordan wanting you to know how Moiraine and Lan met and how she made him her warder.Since the mystery concerning these characters and the reasons for their quest to find the Dragon Reborn helped make the first three or four volumes more interesting, I recommend a new reader read at least the first three volumes before reading this book. I do not think this is the best of the series and if one were to judge the series on this one you might not be too enthralled. By the way, it is worth looking up the different covers to see how different the same collection can be presented in different countries: the UK version put Terry Pratchett prominently in first place and used Josh Kirby Discworld cover art, while the US version doesn’t even mention Pratchett at all on the cover!
