About this deal

The 150-400 is more than one stop faster, and with high shutter speeds that drives ISO to high values where that difference is significant. The focus limiter comes in handy—you can set the autofocus system to look for focus only in the close-up range for times when you know you're working in the macro range, or only for distant subjects at times when you're separated from the action. Only on very rare occasions with some extremely harsh backlit subjects did I see a faint hint of CA.

On the other hand, if you are like me, who is not a wildlife photographer, who does not shoot birds often (testing the lens does not count) and is not a sports photographer by profession, if I still want that massive reach in case I need it, then the 100-400mm lens makes perfect sense, and the lens is within the affordable range for most people. With the lens hood attached and the zoom retracted to 100mmm, the lens is very similar in length to the 300mm prime. Two super HR lenses and 2 HR lenses work in tandem to produce bright photos with edge-to-edge sharpness across the full zoom range. If you want to quickly switch from AF to MF and back again you can't beat the pull-back focusing ring. IS lens set to its maximum aperture, you can see some light fall-off in the corners, but nothing too excessive. However, the 100-400mm's IS system works a bit differently than Olympus two other optical IS lenses. After shooting for about 30 minutes several loons come up fairly close and did their 'water dance,' a sure sign that it was time for me to move on. I've covered cameras at PCMag for the past 10 years, which has given me a front row seat for the DSLR to mirrorless transition, the smartphone camera revolution, and the mainstream adoption of drones for aerial imaging. Like all Micro Four Thirds lenses, pixel-level sharpness visibly deteriorates if you set the aperture much smaller than this, due to the inevitable onset of diffraction. This is good news to videographers, but unlikely to affect stills photography so much, as roll movement only really causes blur at much slower shutter speeds than one would use hand-held with this lens.

Duologi is a trading name of Specialist Lending Ltd, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (register number 774712 ). A number of convenient AF features allow for simple switching between functions depending on the subjects’ distance and internal stabilisation assists with hand holding for more keepers even in lower lighting conditions. The sharpness is more than good enough and I'd not hesitate to use it, and if you are purchasing this lens, be confident to know that at 400mm end, you'd still get fantastic results. That said, the 100-400mm aperture range makes this approach quite difficult; by limiting my high ISO level, shutter speeds were often very slow, especially when shooting at 400mm f/6.

OM System’s ZERO coating reduces flare and ghosting, and the diaphragm employs nine rounded blades to give a near-circular aperture, in a bid to provide attractive bokeh.
