About this deal

We felt the backlight was perhaps a little slow for super-fast gaming when we first reviewed it, but perfectly adequate for some nice multimedia and slower-paced gaming. ports, the latter of which is the only one capable of running the monitor at its native resolution and maximum refresh rate.

Fast-moving action and dramatic transitions will be rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of ghosting. When used as part of a multi-monitor setup it offers a near-seamless and elegant transition between screens. No issues noted, and the display seemed to perform decently - good color when calibrated, good HDR (if a tad washed out and very inaccurate at high brightness), and good response times and motion clarity.

A CIE-1976 chromaticity diagram (which provides improved accuracy compared with older CIE-1931 methods) is included which provides a visual representation of the monitors colour gamut as compared with sRGB, and if appropriate also relative to a wide gamut reference space such as DCI-P3.

This was not possible on the smaller bright areas due to size of the local dimming, but for 10% windows and above we had a high peak brightness capability. Text size is very comfortable with a 2560 x 1440 resolution on a 27″ sized screen and this is still a very popular option in this space. This still seems like a strong contender, but I'll likely give it a few months at least and see what shakes out. Switch settings between in-built presets for FPS, racing, or RTS games, or customise your own ideal conditions and save them.

You could probably consider the screen to have a single overdrive mode experience across VRR if you were to stick with ‘weak’ setting too which is good news. Make sure you have the perfect atmosphere or just showcase your style with the AOC AG274QXM 27" QHD IPS G-SYNC Compatible 170Hz Gaming Monitor (AG274QXM). Together with local dimming technology ,which means that the backlight of the monitor will bright differently depending on the requirements that every picture displayed on the screen needs.

That said, they come with their own disadvantages that I’ll discuss shortly, but first I want to lay on some well deserved praise.

Especially so without a useable sRGB mode where you unfortunately don’t have access even to the brightness control. You can see a pretty decent PQ gamma on the right hand side which was pleasing, but there is a massive skew in the balance of RGB in this mode for a wide range of grey shades, especially for lighter shades and white. Type-A ports, which are speedy enough by themselves, one (as indicated by its yellow colouring) also supports fast charge. At the lower end this can be important if you are using the screen up close for more general office-type work, especially in darker room conditions or at night. However, it packs some cutting edge tech behind its panel that helps to elevate it above its brethren. This is far beyond anything you can get from edge-lit backlights which only have a very limited number of zones (normally 8, 16 or 32) and are common in the HDR monitor space.
